Hextech Singed, Annie in Wonderland released today

Hextech Singed.

Singed players, rejoice! Your long wait for a great skin is finally over. Today, Riot released Hextech Singed, a steampunk version of your favorite mad chemist that looks like something straight out of the movie ‘9’ (as does the Hextech Galio). It’s an incredibly kick-ass skin.

Today we also get access to the legendary Annie in Wonderland skin. Once you see Tibbers in a bunny suit, replete with a cummerbund, I’m sure you’ll fall in love. That thing is just hilarious.

This new batch of skins also included Tundra Hunter Warwick. Let me just warn you, the loading screen is much cooler than the skin in game. In game he looks like a Warwick paint job, but damn if that loading screen isn’t cool.

The Warwick skin is 520 RP while the Singed and Annie skins are 975 and 1820 RP respectively.

Legendary skins catch an update

Alien Invader Heimerdiner.

Alien Invader Heimerdinger was by far the most disappointing “legendary” skin to date. It was just Heimer with a different shirt and a slightly reshaped head (like the standard skin doesn’t look like a brain, anyway). I can think of plenty of things I would rather waste $20 on.

Luckily, Riot heard the community outcry around the underwhelming skin and decided it was time for an update. Now the Invader skin casts some very otherworldly turrets, which is a big step in the right direction. It makes the skin stand out as a truly unique purchase, which is what I think most people were hoping for. Firefighter Tristana also got an update. She now sprays water from the fire hose instead of bullets. Again, a nice touch.

If there’s one thing to be said for the Riot development team, it’s that they listen to the community. Sometimes we have to harass and cajole, but this change and changes like the level 30 requirement for ranked games restore some of my faith in the developer’s ability to successfully run this game.

Riot responds under skin pricing heat

French Maid Nidalee.

Riot caught a lot of criticism around the release of the legendary Alien Invader Heimerdinger skin, though it wasn’t just about the legendary skin. Most players think skins are in general too expensive, and I have to agree.

I’ll include Riot’s full official response here, if only because it’s so weird:

Summoners,

We have a couple pieces of good news for you. For the next release of skins, we are going to be shipping out 6 skins, all for 520 RP, including the much-anticipated French Maid Nidalee skin.

We have heard the community requests for more low-priced skin options and a more clear definition of Legendary skins. In response, we are doing a one-time release of skins at 520. Players have anticipated the release of French Maid Nidalee at prices up to 10,000 RP, but we are releasing her with the other 520 skins to start to balance the skin pricing. We are also releasing the other following skins at 520 RP:
• Caterpillar Kog’Maw
• Sonoran Kog’Maw
• Goalkeeper Blitzcrank
• Striker Ezreal
• Blast Zone Heimerdinger

Please note, we will be releasing skins at other price points in the future.

Going forward, per suggestions from the community, Legendary skins will have:
• Texture changes
• Model changes

And at least one of the following additional features:
• Some New Animations
• Some New VO
• Some New Effects

Finally, we wanted to share our plans for skins going forward. We are getting very close to meeting our goal of having a skin for each Champion. Once we reach that goal, we will move forward with creating downright awesome skins, and more player options in skin prices. To reach that second goal, we will be adding inexpensive skins for Champions that only have high-priced options, and we will be adding cooler skins for Champions that already have an inexpensive option. However, it will likely take a few months before we have multiple skins for every Champion.

We will keep listening to (rational) feedback, and we appreciate everyone who has contributed ideas and suggestions for how to improve our skin offerings (a lot of them are in this post). Please let us know if this is a step in the right direction.

For starters, why does it take a huge community response to not take a lashing on skin prices? And why does the post make it sound like this is some kind of favor? It’s also a little disconcerting to see that the primary goal so far has been churning out skins and that Riot will focus on quality later. If these are just the slush pile, how much will the “downright awesome” skins cost?

All of this could be my own obsession with the wording, but this post really rubbed me the wrong way.

LoL: Riot teases Gentleman Cho’Gath, announces another legendary Corki skin

Red Baron Corki. The Riot announcement forums have been a flurry of activity this weekend, though not for the things you might expect. Personally, I’ve been waiting on the Twisted Treeline matchmaking release every week since it debuted on the Test Realm. Instead, there was news of a café disturbance.

The perpetrator appears to be Gentleman Cho’Gath, a long rumored/desired skin for your favorite alien champ. The post included a crude sketch of Cho in a top hat and tuxedo with a monocle and a cane. Personally, I love the skin idea, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see it release with a fairly hefty price tag.

Speaking of hefty price tags (nice segue, no?), Riot also announced another legendary skin: Red Baron Corki. Why Corki needs two legendary skins is completely beyond me, but maybe he’s just easy to remodel. The skin drops our fearless pilot into a red biplane. It actually looks really damn cool, and one of the screenshots even featured Gentleman Cho, albeit in badly photoshopped form.

I’m assuming we’ll see Corki in the Shen patch, but it’ll probably be some time before we get the Gentleman. Now I just need to try and win a couple tourneys for the Riot points to buy that overpriced Corki skin.
