Firmware 3.15 will make PSP Minis playable on PS3

PSP Minis on a PSPgo.There’s another firmware update coming to the PS3, build 3.15, that will allow the system to finally play those PSP Minis. Yes, at long last you can make just one purchase of those overpriced little one-hitters and play them on your console.

It looks like the update works with titles you’ve already purchased as well. Just head to your download list and you can pick up the game on your console. The update also makes it a little easier to transfer data from one PS3 to another, a nice little bonus for those of you who picked up the PS3 Slim. The new data transfer is a simple LAN connection that dumps everything over to your new rig.

Analyst Ben Schachter thinks GTA may have peaked

Few games have sparked so furious social debate while maintaining incredible sales and garnering legions of followers. One analyst thinks we’ve finally seen the series peak, though. Ben Schachter wonders if the lackluster sales of content like the Liberty City DLC and the handheld Chinatown aren’t the death rattle of Take Two’s little baby.

…we must raise an even bigger question: has the Grand Theft Auto franchise peaked? Given the strength of GTA IV in 2008, the question may seem misplaced, but our concern is that the very highly rated new GTA content for Xbox as well as PSP and DS did not perform up to expectations in 2009. Now, we very clearly understand that these do not represent ‘true’ new GTA titles. However, the fact is that these were compelling titles, attractively priced, and reasonably well-promoted, yet they fell relatively flat. We do not mean to pour salt on an open wound, but this does raise questions about the strength of TTWO’s crown jewel. It is an issue we will monitor closely (we also note that we expect increased competition in the open-world action genre in 2010 and beyond).

He goes on to consider the underwhelming financial report, raising questions about whether or not Take Two can turn a profit without a GTA release. Sure, Rockstar has some strong titles, like Borderlands and Bioshock, but those aren’t the kind of games people are spending as much time in as GTA, making it more likely that you’ll see second hand buyers over the seemingly ubiquitous purchasing of a GTA title.

Mass Effect 2 will be missing the elevators

Mass Effect heroine riding the elevator. The BioWare forums have been a treasure trove of Mass Effect 2 information over the weekend. This latest tidbit concerns the ubiquitous elevator loading sequence we saw in the original game. That’s going away, replaced by a classic loading screen with extra information and visuals. Oh boy!

Here’s what BioWare’s Thomas Roy said:

The elevators were made in ME1 so we didn’t have to show boring loading screens. However there were a lot of complaints, so we’ve gone back to loading screens and movies. We still have elevators in ME2, but you don’t wait inside them. We’ll cut to a loading screen instead.

We’ve tried to make the loading screen more interesting this time by adding interesting visuals and information.

The elevator conversations had some funny moments, but hopefully people will enjoy this new system better than the old one!

Any way you slice it, loading screens are lame, but I think I prefer games that don’t try to mask the fact that there’s some behind the scenes work going on with occasionally funny moments.

Mainstream media taking shots at Avatar: The Game

The world seems more conscious than ever of the existence and significance of video games, but it’s not like we’re seeing the voice actors and developers behind Halo showing up on Conan every night. He did make one of the first jabs at the video game world I’ve seen in the mainstream media. Check the video below:

The real game probably isn’t much better. I’m excited for the movie, but every development house should stay away from this kind of trash development unless they’re ready to make something really great. Rush jobs never look good.

Nintendo thinks Majora’s Mask was ahead of its time

Majora's Mask.Majora’s Mask still stands as my favorite Zelda game of all time. The world was immersive and addictive, to the point that I blew through the game almost without realizing it. That micro-world idea, where you play through the same three days on repeat, wasn’t the result of years of planning but instead a tight development schedule that only afforded the team a year.

“The ‘Three-Day System’, the idea of a compact world to be played over and over again, came down from Miyamoto-san and one other director, (Yoshiaki) Koizumi-san,” said one of Zelda’s top developers, Eiji Aonuma. “We added that to the mix, and then, finally, we saw the full substance of a The Legend of Zelda game we could make in one year.”

Satoru Iwata added, “Actually, I feel as though, back then, we were given a glimpse of the concept that ‘Deep, compact play is one form of the games of the future’. I think in that sense, as a product, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was a big turning point for Nintendo.”

I don’t know what it is about the month of December but it’s got developers thinking. Again, I love the idea. Few things can ruin a game for me quite like over-ambition.
