Miyamoto wants WMP to enhance next Zelda experience

New Zelda to use Wii MotionPlus. In his latest Q&A session, Shigeru Miyamoto said he’s prioritizing the Wii MotionPlus for the next game in the Zelda series. One of the biggest complaints about Twilight Princess was that the swordplay didn’t closely enough mimic the motions of the controller.

“In this (installment of the series), we’re using MotionPlus to make you feel much more like you’re actually fighting while holding a sword in your hand,” said Miyamoto. At E3 this year Shigeru had said he wanted to make the next Zelda Wii MotionPlus exclusive, but that might not be the best idea as far as sales are concerned.

“In the previous game, you aimed at things by pointing at the screen, but this time we’ll use MotionPlus to create a much more convenient targeting system and a more pleasurable playing experience.” Sounds like music to my ears. I really despised the point-for-aiming thing, and if the Wii MotionPlus can solve some of the fencing woes, it should be a nice improvement.

The Q&A is in Japanese for now, but Nintendo usually posts an English translation shortly after.

Weekend deals: COD4 and the Target Wii sale

Target store logo.As the holidays inch ever closer it’s nice to be up on all the latest deals. Some of them are even good enough to get a little something for yourself.

For starters, Target is offering the buy-2-get-1 deal that’s been so popular lately on Wii games. Unfortunately it only applies to games (no accessories this time around) but it is for every game. Get yourself some Wii Sports Resort and throw the other two at your brother/son/roommate. No sense sending them out of the house, right? Sale starts tomorrow.

Steam’s offering a chance to play through COD4 before the release of Modern Warfare 2 drops. The old-school version is a whopping 40% off retail, down to $23.99, up until Monday. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t played the game, but if you lost your discs or something, at least Steam is here for you.

Everyone (actually Europe) gets a black Wii but us

Black Wii.Nintendo’s really got it easy this holiday season. Or it could, anyway. The Wii has made boatloads of money and the only thing people really want from the console is a little color. Well, that and HD, but really the HD is unnecessary for the games that are fun on the Wii. So, ridiculous requests aside, all the world wants is colors for the Wii, and it seems everyone but America is going to get that wish.

Yes, next month the whole of Europe will have a chance to nab a limited edition black Wii bundle, complete with Wii Sports Resort and MotionPlus dongle. Nintendo will also be releasing a bunch of accessories. The package is available to Ireland and the UK on November 6th and the rest of Europe November 20th.

So why not us, Nintendo? Why not release the console that would outsell all those 250GB bundles this holiday season? Why not give us the Wii’s evil twin? Why?

Wii piracy update bricking legit consoles

Nintendo Wii pulled apart. The Nintendo tech forums are abuzz with reports that Wii update 4.2 is bricking consoles. The update was meant to kill homebrew applications and pirated games on modded consoles, an effort that requires changes to the Wii’s bootloader. If something goes wrong during install you get a corrupt bootloader…and a dead Wii.

The update was prefaced by the following warning:

Because unauthorized modifications to save data or program files may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.2 will also check for and automatically remove such save data or program files.

That’s a nice road marker for all the hackers out there, basically reminding them that to continue hacking they should avoid the update.

A Nintendo rep stopped by the forums to offer free repairs to anyone with an unmodified console that dies after the update. It’s a nice offer, but it was delivered in a way that says, “We know you modified your console. This wouldn’t be happening if you didn’t. Stop lying.” And sending your Wii away for repairs because of a software update gone wrong. Well I can’t think of much that would be worse.

Show Link Some Love With His Evolution Poster

History of Link poster.I tried to find a bigger picture of what you see at right, but there just wasn’t much out there so it’ll have to do. That’s a picture of the newest poster up on Club Nintendo, which features Link’s many faces over his 20-year history. The poster is one in a set of three, the other two of which are promos for Phantom Hourglass and Twilight Princess.

For 350 coins you’ll get this great piece of memorabilia along with the other two posters. To be honest, I don’t even care about the other two posters. This one is good enough by itself. The prom posters measure 22 in x 28 in while the “History of Link” poster comes 16.5 in x 28.7 in.
