Everyone (actually Europe) gets a black Wii but us

Black Wii.Nintendo’s really got it easy this holiday season. Or it could, anyway. The Wii has made boatloads of money and the only thing people really want from the console is a little color. Well, that and HD, but really the HD is unnecessary for the games that are fun on the Wii. So, ridiculous requests aside, all the world wants is colors for the Wii, and it seems everyone but America is going to get that wish.

Yes, next month the whole of Europe will have a chance to nab a limited edition black Wii bundle, complete with Wii Sports Resort and MotionPlus dongle. Nintendo will also be releasing a bunch of accessories. The package is available to Ireland and the UK on November 6th and the rest of Europe November 20th.

So why not us, Nintendo? Why not release the console that would outsell all those 250GB bundles this holiday season? Why not give us the Wii’s evil twin? Why?

Wii Sports Resort Sells Over 500K Copies

Wii Sports Resort Sword Fighting.Anyone surprised? Anyone at all? Thought not.

This is about the most uninspiring bit of Nintendo news ever, but it’s definitely worth at least noting, and probably congratulating Iwata and company on their great success. In just over a week’s time Wii Sports Resort has sold over 500,000 copies in the US alone.

Those numbers are pretty impressive, whether you expected them or not. As several commenters have pointed out on various sites, this is a game that really goes after the casual player. I’d expect it to spread much like Mario Kart did. I, for one, really hated the Wii’s Mario Kart when I first played it. A few attempts later with a group of friends, though, and I was enjoying myself. It gave us something fun to do in between a late lunch and our evening festivities. I’d expect WSR to have the same, “not a bad way to spend an afternoon” appeal for a lot of people. It just might take some time for more of those folks to buy it.

Wii MotionPlus is Selling Well Despite Industry Sales

The Wii MotionPlus.NPD’s June report looked a little dire for most of the video game world. Hardware sales are down, software sales are down, Sony doesn’t seem to improving, etc, etc. Nintendo, however, is proving itself to be the little engine that could with this generation. Despite lagging sales numbers, the Wii MotionPlus is selling incredibly well, and Wii Sports Resort isn’t even out yet.

Let’s have a look at the numbers, shall we? You may remember the Wii only sold 361,700 units in June. Not huge numbers, and I certainly wouldn’t expect Wii MotionPlus sales to come anywhere close, especially without Wii Sports Resort. Now granted, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 was shipping with the new and improved dongle, but that’s really the only game taking serious advantage of the accessory.

The MotionPlus sold almost 170,000 units in its first month, though, and that’s not counting the ones that shipped with the new Tiger game, which itself sold 272,400 units. All in all you’re talking about nearly a half a million units, and do I need to say again, Sports Resort isn’t out yet! By all accounts the game is awesome – a big improvement on the already excellent Wii Sports game. When it finally releases, you can bet you’ll see even bigger MotionPlus numbers.
