‘All You Need Is Love’ Becomes Fastest-Selling Rock Band Track

Love is all you need.In just two short days the first downloadable track for The Beatles: Rock Band, All You Need Is Love, became the fastest-selling piece of DLC in franchise history. According to Microsoft, sales from the song download have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the Doctors Without Borders program.

The first of the Limited Edition Beatles-themed consoles has sold as well, netting charity a cool $17,300. Microsoft reminded everyone reading the press release that there would be a limited number of the consoles available and any money from the auctioned consoles will go to Doctors Without Borders. You should also remember that downloading the track over Xbox Live enters you in a drawing to receive one of the limited edition consoles through December 9th. The winner will also receive a Rickenbacker 325 replica controller.

Bioshock 2 Gets A Date

Bioshock 2 logo.It looks like Take Two is going to make good on the promise of delivering Bioshock 2 in the early months of 2010. The sequel to the developer’s smash hit got a global release date of February 9, 2010.

For those who have forgotten, Bioshock 2 puts you in the boots of Big Daddy some ten years after the first game ended. Now there’s a monster roaming the Atlantic coast snatching up little girls and dragging them down to Rapture. It’s your job to stop him.

Bioshock 2 will also feature a multiplayer system that works as a prequel. From the press release:

Multiplayer in BioShock 2 will provide a rich prequel experience that expands the origins of the BioShock fiction. Set during the fall of Rapture, players assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, a premier provider of Plasmids and Tonics in the underwater city of Rapture that was first explored in the original BioShock. Players will need to use all the elements of the BioShock toolset to survive, as the full depth of the BioShock experience is refined and transformed into a unique multiplayer experience that can only be found in Rapture.

I would have loved to see this game come out this year, but at least there’s a little something to look forward to in the wee months after the holidays.

Monkey Island Chapter Three Arrives September 29th

Lair of the Leviathan. If you haven’t yet finished Chapter 2 of The Tales of Monkey Island you should probably get going on that. The third installment arrives September 29th and will be called The Lair of the Leviathan. Lots of piratey goodness in that title.

The release date is only for the PC version of the game. As with The Siege of Spinner Cay, you’ll be waiting on the 360/Wii releases just a little longer.

Along with the expansion of the new game, you can find Guybrush Threepwood’s original adventure, The Secret of Monkey Island on sale from Steam and Direct2Drive this weekend for $5. The sale coincide with Talk Like A Pirate Day, September 19th. The sale will run until the 21st, so you’ve got a few days to decide whether you can part with honest Abe.

Microsoft Adds Another 250GB Bundle

Forza 3 logo.Microsoft has announced another 250GB bundle for the Xbox 360. This one includes Forza 3 though without a customized console like we found in the Modern Warfare 2 bundle. Unfortunately for you US types, the bundle will only be available in the UK and South Africa.

This is the third in a pretty sweet lineup of 360 bundles over the past few days, obviously designed to compete with the 250GB PS3 bundles Sony has been showing. The bundles have some strange differences, though, and not just with regard to region.

The Halo bundle, for instance, forgoes the 250GB hard drive, something that would be great for all those Bungie Pro users looking to save additional game content locally, for a copy of Halo 3. The Modern Warfare 2 bundle seems to be the only one with a customized console, but it doesn’t include customized controllers. And of course there is the region issue. Why some and not others? Why not standardize these things across the board? And for god’s sake, why won’t they sell the 250GB unit as a separate periph?

As the holidays loom closer I’ll be interested to see what else comes out of Redmond. More bundles, or just more tweaks to the existing SKUs?

PS3 Gets A 250GB Bundle

PS3 Slim.Shortly after Microsoft announced the 250GB Xbox 360 bundle for Modern Warfare 2, images started to surface showing a PS3 Slim bundle with a similarly sized hard drive and Uncharted 2. Sony has since denied the bundle for US, but made no comment with regard to other regions.

The 250GB console first showed up in the FCC on the same day Sony launched the PS3 Slim. According to Eurogamer, a trusted retailer has confirmed the new SKU in three varieties, each bundled with a different game. It looks like the bundle will run approximately $500 in the UK and will ship with either em>Uncharted 2, Assassin’s Creed II, or Gran Turismo 5. Sony has yet to confirm any of this in writing, but if the new SKU coincides with the game launch dates, each bundle would likely be available for a limited time. The games rumored to be included launch October 23rd, November 20th, and in Q4 2009, respectively.
