League of Legends wins dual IGN awards

Corki UFO Skin.I wrote about League of Legends a couple weeks ago as my must-try game of 2009. The game is starting to pick up some critical acclaim along with shameless endorsements from a large number of players. Riot announced on its official forums today that the game won the IGN Reader’s Choice Multiplayer Game as well as Strategy Game of the Year.

If you’ve been spending much time on the forums you know that Riot was offering up a free skin if it won two of the three awards the game was up for. Well, it won all three, meaning any player who had created an account prior to today will get a free Corki unlock along with the UFO skin.

Few things make me want to play a game more than an active/supportive community to developer relationship. From what I’ve seen so far, LoL has one of the best, and its little perks like this that make me think, ‘Should I try Heroes of Newerth?…Nah.’

Casting director leaks Battlefront III

Battlefront III.Ya know, I’d be pretty pissed as a developer if a casting director I had worked with was leaking details about my projects all over god’s green earth. Now, Battlefront III wasn’t exactly a secret, but LucasArts hasn’t announced it yet and the best we have is rumors. Up until yesterday, anyway.

Casting director Chris Marazzo, who worked on Star Wars Empire at War: Forces of Corruption, told battlefront3.net that the game is in development and that he’s one of the people working on it.

“Thanks for getting in touch. The Original Title was Battlefront 3 but it evolved into Star Wars Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. However Battlefront 3 is also in development. It was by far the most fun and coolest casting I ever worked on.”

Marazzo also said he would try to get storyboards to the fansite “by the end of the week.” Guess we’ll see if he makes good on that. As you’d expect, there’s still no word from LucasArts.

EA wants more than graphics for new C&C

John Riccitiello.EA’s John Riccitiello wants more from the RTS genre than just cooler graphics. That’s about the best news you could give me with regard to the genre. Sure, it’s cool to see every detail of every unit dying, but at some point I want a little more than the usual rush strats and gold hoarders.

“We’ve gotten to the point where you can see the particles around individual grenade explosions inside rooms where windows fall apart. That was never what made RTS good. That was just sort of eye candy on top of a very traditional game mechanic. From when Red Alert and Starcraft sort of defined the genre, it hasn’t moved,” Riccitiello told Kotaku.

Preach on, brother.

“I’m a believer that the RTS sector is more open to fundamental innovation at a metagame level than almost any genre. I actually think that some of what Playfish does, in terms of iterating games on a weekly basis, Some of what Facebook does, in terms of letting you collectively experience things, have not been stitched together by the game industry in terms of lessons learned there.

You start applying that thinking to a C&C franchise you get something pretty special.”

Mhmm. Mhmm. I like what he’s saying, but as with all developmental shifts for any genre, I’ll wait to see the success before I pass any judgement. Riccitiello head is in the right place. I just hope he can execute.

Historical Battle Map Pack is Live for Halo Wars

New Halo Wars maps.Everyone’s favorite Major updated early this morning to let everyone know that the Halo Wars Historical Battle Map Pack is now live and ready for download. The DLC will run you 800 MS Points (can’t wait for them to do away with these things). The maps come with some familiar names – Blood River, Glacial Ravine, Barrens, and Memorial Basin. So that last one is a newish name.

Here’s the blurb from Nelson’s blog:

Expand your Halo Wars experience with the Historical Battle Map Pack Add-on. These four new maps highlight key turning points in the epic war between the UNSC and Covenant forces. The maps include: Blood River – battle a single opponent over a treacherous natural chokepoint; Barrens – engage your enemy in the midst of the Flood; Memorial Basin – two vs. two team play in one of the bloodiest battles in Halo history; and Glacial Ravine — three vs. three action as you fight to control a narrow corridor flanked by energy walls.

Got $5 sitting around? If so, you can go get yours right now.
