Facebook And Twitter Only For Xbox Live Gold Members

Twitter on Xbox 360.Microsoft surprised me yesterday when they announced that Facebook and Twitter on the Xbox 360 would only be available to Xbox Live Gold members. Maybe surprised isn’t the word. My first thought was, ‘of course.’ But then I had to wonder, why?

Why only Gold members? Sure, it adds yet another reason to throw down the $50/year subscription fee, which is pretty minimal cost for the value you get as a regular player. Adding social services to Xbox Live falls in line with the “entertainment hub for your home” strategy that Microsoft has been pushing, so why not make the services free? It may not get more subscribers, but it has the potential to sell more consoles.

I think it’s safe to say that the average Silver member would probably remain Silver even after the two services become available. After all, these are the uber-casual, the people you probably couldn’t entice to sign up with free ice cream. Pitching these services to those people won’t make one bit of difference.

There are plenty of other reasons to try to charge money for this stuff, but the Xbox Live subscription fee is so minimal, and the cash likely already designated to other aspects of their business, that Microsoft would probably see more total value from making the services free. It may not be a ton more, but you’d almost certainly have more people with a controller in hand more often. Isn’t that the dream, after all?

Mass Effect 2 Coming To PC On Time

Mass Effect 2 logo. For a while there, I was a PC gamer only. I had purchased a 360 during my senior year of college and sold it a couple years later because I just wasn’t using it. Between then and about the time I started writing for this blog I had to do something I’m not great at doing when it came to console exclusive games: wait. Games like Mass Effect didn’t release for PC and 360 simultaneously, which was really painful for the major releases.

BioWare has said no more. According to VG247, BioWare’s Jesse Houston let them know that Mass Effect 2 would be shipping for both console and PC at the same time.

This time round, doing it at the same time for a sim-ship, we can control the differences much more smoothly because it’s the same team building it now. Because of this, differences between the two versions of the game should also be minimised, as it’s now the same game appearing on two systems, not a port.

As you all know, games can be delayed, for either one of those systems, for really any reason, and without a whole lot of warning. It’s nice that Houston claims they’ll be launched at the same time, but really, I’m not expecting it.

Blizzard Announces WoW: Cataclysm

Deathwing is back, baby.Following the leaks about the rumored WoW expansion, Blizzard has officially confirmed the release, titled World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Events of Cataclysm take place in good ol’ Azeroth instead of that played-out, new continent horse excrement. Personally, I’ll say this is the most intriguing expansion I’ve seen, even if it does mess with the lore of the world in a pretty huge way. Tauren Paladins…come on.

The new expansion has almost all of the leaked features, for which I’ll defer to the official Blizzard FAQ page. I have to say, I’d be glad to get back to Azeroth if I was still playing. In fact, I just might resub when the xpac comes out, you know, just to kick the tires a bit.

Here’s the relevant info from the FAQ page:

    * Two New Playable Races: Adventure as one of two new races–the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.

    * Level Cap Increased to 85: Earn new abilities, tap into new talents, and progress through the path system, a new way for players to improve characters.

    * Classic Zones Remade: Familiar zones across the original continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have been altered forever and updated with new content, from the devastated Badlands to the broken Barrens, which has been sundered in two.

    * New High-Level Zones: Explore newly opened parts of the world, including Uldum, Grim Batol, and the great Sunken City of Vashj’ir beneath the sea.

    * More Raid Content than Ever Before: Enjoy more high-level raid content than previous expansions, with optional more challenging versions of all encounters.

    * New Race and Class Combinations: Explore Azeroth as a gnome priest, blood elf warrior, or one of the other never-before-available race and class combinations.

    * Guild Advancement: Progress as a guild to earn guild levels and guild achievements.

    * New PvP Zone & Rated Battlegrounds: Take on PvP objectives and daily quests on Tol Barad Island, a new Wintergrasp-like zone, and wage war in all-new rated Battlegrounds.

    * Archaeology: Master a new secondary profession to unearth valuable artifacts and earn unique rewards.

    * Flying Mounts in Azeroth: Explore Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms like never before.

As you might imagine, no word on a release date other than 2010.

GT5 News Coming “Very Soon”

Gran Turismo 5 looking sharp.According to VG247, SCEE president Andrew House said there would be news on GT5 “very soon.” The comment comes after Sony was quiet about the famed racing franchise during GamesCom this year.

“I am not going to make a prediction on that but I think you will see something on GT5 very soon,” said House. Could that mean the Tokyo Games Show? Seems like an ideal spot to unveil some serious news about the game everyone’s been waiting on for years now.

The weird part about the whole thing is that GT5 was actually playable at GamesCom this year. Sony has also apparently released screens of a few menu and options changes. So why not talk about it? Why not give some inclination that you even care the game exists? I try not to puzzle these things too long because often the logic of the scenario just eludes me. At any rate, hopefully we’ll have some actual news regarding Gran Turismo soon.

Lionhead Announces Fable III With A Short Trailer

Fable 3?With Lord of the Rings-like bravado, Peter Molyneux took the stage at GamesCom to give us the latest in his over-hyped, over-promised series, Fable. The new game, Fable III, sets the player as the king of Albion, poised to make decisions that will change the face of the realm. As always, you can be good, evil, or somewhere in between.

The game actually sounds pretty cool, I just can’t get my hopes up about the Fable projects any more. I’ve actually waited until now to even pick up Fable II. Yes, it looked cool. Yes, I wanted to get it at launch, but frankly, I was pretty disappointed with the original. Molyneux just hyped it so much that it sounded incredible. In reality, the “moral choices” were pretty mundane, and once you started murdering the townsfolk it was a little hard to stop.

I have heard great things about Fable II, but I’m going in expecting the worst game known ot man so that things seem in proportion. With the first, I wanted the best game ever. This time I’ll take the other route. For the third, I’ll finally be able to run in with middle of the road expectations. Check out the trailer below.
