PS3 costs Sony $4.7 billion on the way to profitability

Sony HQ.Sony’s Q2 fiscal-year earnings report reads a bit like a good horror story. The most interesting for our purposes is that “networked products and services” division, which includes the Playstation brand. It also includes a whopping $654 million loss this quarter, which Sony attributes to declining PS2 sales and appreciation of the yen. The PS2 sold some 600,000 units less this year than last. Ouch.

Maybe worse, though, is that the numbers have given math nerds around the web enough info to figure that the PS3 has cost Sony roughly $4.7 billion over the course of its life. That’s a monstrous figure, particularly since this is Sony’s third-gen console. Microsoft lost about as much with the original Xbox, but the 360 hasn’t hurt Redmond nearly as badly.

There is some hope, though. As manufacturing costs continue to plummet and sales rise with the PS3 Slim, Sony thinks the brand will become profitable as early as next year. That would be a hell of a turnaround, and frankly one I doubt we’ll see, but I’m willing to hope a little for Sony’s sake.

Forza 3 tries to bridge the gap between serious sims and arcade racers

Forza 3 car crash. In case you’ve forgotten, Forza 3 is out today and ready to be driven across the world’s most famous racetracks. The game is unique in that it’s the first advanced driving sim that allows users to dial the experience from arcade racing to full simulation.

Among the many features Turn 10 has placed just a couple menu selections away are the options to toggle auto-braking, suggested driving lines, driving/traction assists, and tire wear. Those options have been in other games, but accessibility was almost always an issue. If you realized a race was too easy or too difficult, you usually had to scrap the whole thing. Turn 10 wants Forza 3 to be for everyone, though, so the controls are almost as close as the accelerator and the brake.

Accessibility doesn’t mean the sim features are missing, though. You still have full control over your rotors, tires, suspensions and the like. All of that for hundreds of cars and you’re pretty much guaranteed you’ll get your money’s worth. Oh, did I mention the game is actually fun? I’ve only played the demo so far, but it’s good enough that I’ll probably pick the game up in the next week or so.

Volkswagen announces new GTI with an iPhone app

Real Racing GTI App.Volkswagen pulled an industry first this week when it decided to launch a new car via an iPhone game. The move wasn’t a leak, but a deliberate attempt to get the 2010 GTI into the hands of its consumers in a way VW thinks those consumers can relate to.

“The GTI customer is a tech-savvy consumer who enjoys social networking, playing games and spending time on mobile devices — most often an iPhone. Launching the all-new 2010 GTI via the Real Racing GTI App allows us to connect with this savvy GTI consumer within his or her everyday life in a way that no 30-second spot ever could,” said Tim Ellis, VP of Marketing for Volkswagen of America. The Real Racing GTI App is available for free download, and offers players a chance to win one of six new GTIs to be given away over the course of the next six weeks.

September was a great month for MMOs

Aion angel flying. The NPD numbers are in for September showing strong sales among MMOs in the PC market. NCSoft’s Aion topped the list, bumping last month’s Sims 3 down a slot. Third and fourth went to Champions Online and Wrath of the Lich King respectively, and the Collector’s Edition of Aion. took fifth.

Aside from the MMO scene, the list was dominated by older titles and smaller games. September wasn’t set to be a huge month for blockbuster titles, regardless of the fact that most of the major Q4 releases have been pushed to 2010. Any time Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships is in the top 20, you know it’s been a slow month. Here’s the full list:

    1. Aion
    2. The Sims 3
    3. Champions Online
    4. World Of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack
    5. Aion Collector’s Ed

    7. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe

USPS worker steals 2200 games from GameFly

GameFly guy looking for his mail.A former Philly mail-handler has been confirmed to be a complete moron. Reginald Johnson admitted to stealing some 2200 GameFly games from Philadelphia addressees before they could be delivered. Johnson’s now facing 12-18 in prison.

I’d love to know how this guy thought he would get away with it. The court valued the merchandise around $84,000, which is pretty noticeable on a merchandise loss report. Add to it the fact that he’s stealing from residents in the very city where he works. Wouldn’t that be the first place GameFly might look? Why not steal from people whose mail goes through several destinations before reaching them. C’mon man, haven’t you seen Catch Me If You Can?

For Johnson’s arrest, police chased him from work until he crashed his SUV, wherein the cops found a duffel with 81 games and another 79 games in the vehicle, along with several consoles and few accessories with receipts from Gamestop.
