Wii Fit yields “underwhelming results”

Wii Fit.It should come as little surprise that Wii Fit won’t get you as fit as, say, actually going out and getting some exercise. There’s a new study that proves it, though. The American Council on Exercise released the results of the study, which was done by the University of Wisconsin, and said that Wii Fit produced “underwhelming results.”

The report is loaded with unsurprising results. For example, the study found that actual boxing – the full contact type that you would likely never do in your living room – burns three times the calories of the boxing program in Wii Fit. There was one surprising tidbit to be had. Apparently a healthy regimen of Wii Sports is actually better for you than Wii Fit. Now I don’t know if that’s because the games are more fun so you exert yourself more or if Wii Fit is just that bad. Either way, I think Nintendo’s marketing squad deserves a pat on the back. Nice work selling us nothing, guys.

No Guild Wars 2 until 2011

Guild Wars 2 logo. The release of information about NCSoft’s Guild Wars 2 could best be described as a slow trickle. Way back in March of 2007, ArenaNet got everyone pumped up with predictions of a late 2008 beta, which would likely mean a 2009 launch. Well, here we are today and we have neither of those things. There is a light on the distant horizon though, as NCSoft CEO Jaeho Lee recently told investors. We should see at least a closed beta for Guild Wars 2 in 2010, with a public release in 2011.

As Lee put it, “I believe there will be certain public events in the year 2010… at least a closed beta test for those titles. Commercialisation will be expected, at this point, probably some time in the year 2011.” When he says “those titles” he’s lumping in Blade and Soul, the martial arts MMO NCSoft also has in development. I see it as great news for both titles. The Guild Wars announcement is long overdue, but Blade and Soul sounds promising. Besides, who can say no to a little beta time?

Modern Warfare 2 pirate arrested

Modern Warfare 2 Bundle.Christian Del Adamo’s plan was simple enough – buy a stolen Modern Warfare 2 bundle before it released, crack the game code, and sell illegal copies for profit. Del Adamo was going to use donations to get the bundle, which he would later repay with copies of the game. He was even talking to a hologram maker to make his copies seem a little less shady. And it all would have worked out if it weren’t for that damn internet.

Activision got word of the idea, which Del Adamo had apparently posted to sites Activision watches, and contacted IPCybercrime.com, who then tracked down our thief using Facebook, of all things. Poor guy had just turned 18 in August, too. Welcome to trial as an adult, Christian.

Detectives in LA busted another guy who admitted to stealing a crate of the console bundles from a retail store and then selling them for $800 on Craig’s List. I’m not sure why I expect these people to show some discretion but I do. Then again, they are trying to steal, copy, and sell what is about to become the biggest entertainment launch of all time, and they’re posting about it publicly. Assuming they’re somewhat interested in gaming, shouldn’t decades of stupid villains have taught these guys something?

No Doubt sues Activision over Band Hero

No Doubt. No Doubt is suing Activision over unauthorized use of the band’s image in the new Band Hero. Originally the two parties had a contract that allowed Activision to use likenesses of the band members for its own songs. The new game allows players to use No Doubt members as avatars playing other songs, which the band alleges turns them into a virtual karaoke act.

You might remember Courtney Love raising the same stink about use of Cobain’s image for other artists’ work. In this case, though, it seems Activision has put the avatars into situations that could have some legal ramifications. As the lawsuit states, Band Hero stages Gwen Stefani, No Doubt’s sassy frontlady, singing The Stones song “Honky Tonk Woman.” The problem is that the feature “results in an unauthorized performance by the Gwen Stefani avatar in a male voice boasting about having sex with prostitutes.” I’ve certainly heard celebrities cry foul over less.

As expected, Activision claims to be within its rights. No Doubt is looking for damages, an injunction, and a recall of existing copies of the game. Good luck with that one.

N-Gage goes the way of the dodo

Nokia's N-Gage going the way of the Dodo.Nokia will be closing the doors to its wildly unpopular N-Gage gaming service next year, according to an official blog post today. The service never really got off the ground, which isn’t much of a surprise. Remember those phones? They were absurd. After that it became an online platform with a following most industry folks would call “cute.”

Of course Nokia is masking the failure behind the launch of the Ovi Store, but I think we all know what really happened: the App Store. The iPhone tapped into Nokia’s arteries a while back and just isn’t stopping. The platform is much more attractive to developers and is probably making them a lot more money as well.

For the one to two this affects, you will still be able to get your N-Gage games until September 2010. The community site will shut down at the end of the year.
