Ex-Bungie vets form Moonshot Games

Moonshot Games logo.As Halo nears the end of its Bungie-led storyline, it looks like the team behind the series is looking toward their own futures. Three of those guys decided to jump ship prior to the release of Halo: Reach and form their own studio, Moonshot Games.

The company is brand new – they haven’t even tweeted yet! – so all they’ve got is an impressive resume and a reasonable mission statement. “Led by a small team of experienced industry veterans, Moonshot is pledged to the exploration and development of high-quality downloadable games.” Lofty ideals indeed. Whatever the firm’s first project, I think it’s safe to guess it won’t involve space marines, alien zealots, or ancient-ring-like-planet-destroying-weapons. Yeah, none of those.

Game Crazy closing 200 locations this month

Game Crazy store.According to a recent post at Joystiq, used game retailer Game Crazy is looking to close 200 stores this month. The company only has 680 stores, so 200 is a massive chunk to shut down. I was especially surprised to read that the video rental locations attached to the game stores will remain open after the game locations shut down.

The company issued this formal statement:

Movie Gallery, Inc. is currently operating in an unprecedented consumer/retail environment. In order for us to continue to best serve our millions of customers across North America we’re addressing underperforming stores and ensuring that there is sufficient [return on investment] associated with each of these stores going forward. The vast majority of our stores will be unaffected by these efforts.

Maybe Movie Gallery should take a look at recent stats for movie rentals. While that industry dies a slow and irritating death, the used game business continues to frustrate publishers with big sales numbers. Perhaps you should refocus your business model?

Wii piracy update bricking legit consoles

Nintendo Wii pulled apart. The Nintendo tech forums are abuzz with reports that Wii update 4.2 is bricking consoles. The update was meant to kill homebrew applications and pirated games on modded consoles, an effort that requires changes to the Wii’s bootloader. If something goes wrong during install you get a corrupt bootloader…and a dead Wii.

The update was prefaced by the following warning:

Because unauthorized modifications to save data or program files may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.2 will also check for and automatically remove such save data or program files.

That’s a nice road marker for all the hackers out there, basically reminding them that to continue hacking they should avoid the update.

A Nintendo rep stopped by the forums to offer free repairs to anyone with an unmodified console that dies after the update. It’s a nice offer, but it was delivered in a way that says, “We know you modified your console. This wouldn’t be happening if you didn’t. Stop lying.” And sending your Wii away for repairs because of a software update gone wrong. Well I can’t think of much that would be worse.

Wii Gets A Price Cut, Amazon Offers First Deal

Wii's at Amazon. The latest in the string of console price cuts went live today; you can now officially get a Wii for $199, which is $50 off the previous lowest price. As if that weren’t enough to get you to buy, Amazon hopes to be your retailer of choice. The online seller is offering a $25 gift card with every Wii purchase.

You have just under a week to take advantage of the deal, which is only good through October 3rd. You should also make sure you’re buying the console directly from Amazon as third party vendors don’t count toward the deal. You can expect to receive your gift card 10 days or so after purchase, effectively reducing the cost of your next game by 50%.

Blizzard COO Buys A Chunk Of The Steelers

Blizzard COO Paul Sams.Blizzard COO Paul Sams has reportedly gotten into the football business, and I’m not talking about a Madden competitor. No, Sams and his family are listed as one among ten of the new joint owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise. The news came courtesy of the Steelers’ official website, which gives a quick bio for both Sams and his wife.

I guess when you’re at the top of a company whose biggest title has 11 million subscribers and sits on the verge of another expansion, whose critically acclaimed RTS has an upcoming sequel, and whose dungeon masher is about to become a trilogy you simply have more money than god and can buy just about whatever you want. That includes Super Bowl champions.
