Altec Lansing Stage Gig is as unreal as it gets

It looks like Altec Lansing wants a piece of the Rock Band accessory action, even if it means making a product as ridiculous as the Stage Gig. This guitar amp for fake guitars is really just a 40-watt speaker set on an angle so you strike a rocker’s pose in your mom’s basement.

The unit has a single stereo input and output, so you can hook the console straight into the speaker, or chain gang it as a part of your regular setup. If you’re actually willing to spend $100 on this thing, please never contact me for any reason. I’m all for getting into your games, but this takes fake musicianship to an unhealthy level. Like air guitarists but decidedly less cool.

Everyone (actually Europe) gets a black Wii but us

Nintendo’s really got it easy this holiday season. Or it could, anyway. The Wii has made boatloads of money and the only thing people really want from the console is a little color. Well, that and HD, but really the HD is unnecessary for the games that are fun on the Wii. So, ridiculous requests aside, all the world wants is colors for the Wii, and it seems everyone but America is going to get that wish.

Yes, next month the whole of Europe will have a chance to nab a limited edition black Wii bundle, complete with Wii Sports Resort and MotionPlus dongle. Nintendo will also be releasing a bunch of accessories. The package is available to Ireland and the UK on November 6th and the rest of Europe November 20th.

So why not us, Nintendo? Why not release the console that would outsell all those 250GB bundles this holiday season? Why not give us the Wii’s evil twin? Why?

Microsoft cuts third-party memory

If you’ve been enjoying the benefits of a third-party memory card on your 360, your happy days are numbered. Major Nelson confirmed that the next system update will kill support for those little 4GB flash units that have been saving you benjamins and giving you a way to back up your old saves and profiles.

Obviously storage control is one of the best ways for Microsoft to make money for the Xbox division. A 512MB memory card is still $29.99 and the best bargain for the hard drive is the refurbed 120GB from Gamestop for $99.99. As Microsoft continues down the path of DLC, including games, movies, and TV shows, it better come up with bigger storage options. The largest available is that 250GB hard drive in the Modern Warfare 2 bundle, and it won’t be sold separately, for now at least. When it does become available, I’d expect price to be somewhere in the $175, which is just way too much.

Gamestop exclusive controller gets official

Major Nelson has a little more to say about that Gamestop-exclusive controller that showed up on the used game dealer’s website earlier this month. It’s a partnership between Xbox and Gamestop and still totally hideous. For some reason Nelson doesn’t mention why the controller is the way it is, but if you look at the Forza 3 intro vid it seems pretty obvious. Recognize anything about that R8? Something look familiar?

The controller will come bundled with a play-and-charge kit for $69.99. That’s an awful lot to pay for an awfully ugly controller. It’s even more when you consider the holiday controller bundle, which gives you the same thing (minus the hideous makeover) plus four Xbox Live Arcade titles.

Toys R Us has a 3-fer-2 sale this week

That the video game industry has been in a backward slide lately hasn’t been all bad. Companies are ready to make big deals just to get people to buy, well, anything, so it’s been possible to pick up two or three of the newest titles for reasonable rates. Toys R Us is offering up another deal this week, this time in the form of a buy two, get the third free. The sale applies to both games and accessories.

It’s a pretty sweet deal, though I don’t think you can mix and match accessories. Also not sure if it works with pre-orders, but you could always pick up a new game like Uncharted 2 and trade it back in for Forza 3 (yes, mixing some systems) when it releases later this month. The accessory deal is good on anything up to $100, so if you’ve been looking at a controller and maybe a charging station, now could be a good time to get it. Remember, the deal is only good for a week.
