Halo 3 Makes Xbox History

Master Chief doing his thing. This week Halo 3 did something that’s never been done on any Xbox console. The newest release in Bungie’s futuristic franchise (not counting upcoming titles, of course) has sold 10 million units worldwide, making it the 35th game in history to do so and the first on an Xbox console.

The report comes from VGChartz and goes on to cite some less surprising milestones. Did you know Halo 3 was the highest selling single-platform game of the current generation? Of course you did. What on earth would outsell it? Adding PS3 and 360 sales together, though, puts COD4 and GTA:IV above Halo 3. Again, not surprising.

Halo is bound to keep improving on the milestone as prices drop in the face of the Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach releases.

100 Friend Limit Got You Down? Stop Playing Halo 2!

Master Chief is killing your friends list. For too long Microsoft has been the gatekeeper to so much potential fun. I can only have up to 120GB of hard drive space. I can only have an Xbox that lasts for two years before breaking. I can only have 100 friends.

The last, at least, seems to be a bit of a problem with the Xbox Live user base. The real reason you can’t have 100 friends is because too many people still play Halo 2 online. That’s straight from Microsoft, in fact. You see, with so many active subscriptions primarily to play Halo 2, Microsoft would be alienating a huge user base if they decided to suddenly cut support. Unfortunately, there’s also no way for the company to upgrade the current Xbox Live architecture to provide >100 friend support without cutting the cord on that Halo 2 consumer base.

The Microsoft source with the story did say that Halo 3: ODST could be the torpedo that sinks Halo 2 since it would give players two different Halo titles to choose from.

What do you think? Are you still playing Halo 2? Would you understand if Microsoft cut the cord to allow more than 100 friends on Live?

Kotick Made $15 Million Last Year

Kotick looking strangely like a Gollum-baby.Bob Kotick may have an overinflated sense of what his games are worth to consumers, but at least there’s a method to the madness: make money and lots of it. Not only is his company Activision doing extremely well – it made almost $1 billion in Q2 – Kotick’s making some fat cash himself. Forbes recently ran a profile on Bob Kotick that showed off just how much money he made last year: $14,950,102.

Who cares if the Forbes picture (right) makes him look like the freaky love-child of Gollum and Sam Gamgee. Kotick certainly doesn’t. He’s apparently content to keep padding his furniture with our money and then joke that the sofa just isn’t full enough.

Good for you, Bob. Good for you.

Iwata Thinks Wii/DS Population Could Double Yet

Wii and the DS.In a recent investor Q&A, Satoru Iwata was confident in the continued success of Nintendo’s Wii and DS, pretty much as they exist now. Yes, just as they exist now. No Wii HD. No serious DS makeover. Just the consoles we know and millions love.

According to Iwata, some 209 million people are actively using Nintendo’s current generation of hardware. He believes there is real potential for that number to double. “Numerically there is still a possibility to even double the current user population of Wii and DS,” he said. Sounds crazy, but to be honest, who thought the Wii would do what it has done so far? The MotionPlus is blowing up and the DS has consistently done well in every market.

As a word of comfort to investors and gamers alike, Iwata confirmed that the company is not stagnant. He blew the usual huff and puff about hardware development, hinting at the idea that the market just isn’t ready for another console. “When our internal ideas and trend in the world match up, and when it’s clear that we would be able to manufacture an abundant amount at an affordable price, we will be able to publicly speak about next hardware.”

Dragon Age: Origins Gets Pushed Back

Dragon Age: Origins is bringing sexy back. The latest in this year’s string of blockbuster pushbacks comes courtesy of BioWare. Their new RPG, Dragon Age: Origins, has been bumped from the original October 20th release date to November 3rd.

The delay began as a rumor based on altered release dates at several major retailers. BioWare quickly denied the rumor, claiming they were sticking to the October 20th release. Just a day later they officially confirmed the delay and announced the new release date.

What does this mean for you? Well for one, you’ll be waiting to get that freak on with the animal of your choice. For another, not a whole lot. The release was still far enough away that it shouldn’t affect anyone too terribly. What they would be changing this late in the process is beyond me, but I’m not really the developing type. The Playstation 3 version of the game has been delayed with the PC and Xbox 360 versions, though without a set launch date.
