No Guild Wars 2 until 2011

Guild Wars 2 logo.The release of information about NCSoft’s Guild Wars 2 could best be described as a slow trickle. Way back in March of 2007, ArenaNet got everyone pumped up with predictions of a late 2008 beta, which would likely mean a 2009 launch. Well, here we are today and we have neither of those things. There is a light on the distant horizon though, as NCSoft CEO Jaeho Lee recently told investors. We should see at least a closed beta for Guild Wars 2 in 2010, with a public release in 2011.

As Lee put it, “I believe there will be certain public events in the year 2010… at least a closed beta test for those titles. Commercialisation will be expected, at this point, probably some time in the year 2011.” When he says “those titles” he’s lumping in Blade and Soul, the martial arts MMO NCSoft also has in development. I see it as great news for both titles. The Guild Wars announcement is long overdue, but Blade and Soul sounds promising. Besides, who can say no to a little beta time?

Star Trek Online to launch February 2nd

Star Trek Online screen.Cryptic and Atari have announced February 2nd as the official release date for Star Trek Online. The game puts players in the Star Trek universe as high-ranking officers in the Starfleet, complete with their own ships and a license to boldly go where no man has…I think we all get it.

“Throughout the last four decades, Star Trek has been a mainstay in pop culture, influencing legions of fans through television, film, and more. Star Trek Online opens a whole new chapter and expands upon this incredible universe in 2010,” said Atari CEO Jim Wilson. I’m curious to see how the whole thing will play out. I’m not much of a Trekkie, and I honestly find it difficult to imagine the series transitioning well to the MMO genre.

There’s always beta testing though, which is currently underway and should make clear whether the franchise makes sense as an MMO.

Don’t forget to pre-load L4D2

Left 4 Dead 2 is coming Nov. 17th.With all the hype around Modern Warfare 2, you might have forgotten that the Left 4 Dead 2 launch is right around the corner as well. Sure it’s not going to break those major records that MW2 likely will, but it’s probably going to be awesome. If you’re a PC player, take my reminder and go get to downloading. If you’ve pre-ordered the zombie splatterfest, you can pre-load the game up to the November 17th launch.

Why, you ask? For one, what on earth else does your computer do while you sleep. Two, because the game is almost seven gigs. That’s going to be a long download on launch day. Actually, it’s probably going to be a long download this week, too, but at least you won’t be waiting for hours while your friends are carving zombie face and screaming for your company over Vent. i

You’ll also get 10% off when you pre-order on Steam, along with a special hat for Team Fortress 2. Really, there isn’t a reason not to pre-order.

Bioware releases Dragon Age: Origins toolset for the creative among us

Dragon Age: Origins toolset.Bioware’s always been great about supporting the creative communities that develop around its games. The Neverwinter Nights editor was great, and led to all kinds of spinoffs and community created story lines. Hell, Bioware even uses the editor as a tool in their own job applications. They’ve just released the toolset for their latest creation, Dragon Age: Origins, which includes a cinematics editor with lip-sync tools and full camera controls.

The thing looks pretty awesome, and once again should lead to some extremely cool user-generated content. When I first heard about Origins I was sad it wasn’t an MMO. More and more I find myself attracted to games with a significant multiplayer facet, and turned off by single player games. This is the kind of feature that builds a great community around a game that could otherwise have a limited shelf-life for most players, regardless of how cool it is.

Microsoft hiring for Project Natal and Halo

Halo Reach.A couple of interesting job postings went up for Microsoft this week, including positions for both Project Natal and Halo development. Don’t worry, fanboys, those are separate positions. No one’s diluting your competitive gameplay just yet.

The Halo listings are for designers, AI developers, animators, and a multiplayer game design lead. The Natal listings didn’t specifically mention a game or IP for the position, but at least one mentions “a large franchise.” That could mean, well, anything. Another of the Natal positions is for “an excellent next-generation” type thing, which again could be anything, just probably not something we would have seen or heard anything about.

Joystiq got in touch with Major Nelson to confirm that the posts are real. They are. That’s all he would say.
