Halo: Reach to debut at the VGAs December 12th

Halo: Reach cropped logo.Fans of the Halo series now have another date to look forward to. Spike TV’s Geoff Keighley tweeted today that the premiere of Halo: Reach will be at the Video Game Awards on Spike this December the 12th. It will be the first look anyone gets at the game, probably with an exclusive trailer.

I’m pretty excited about the game. I was always a bit more interested in the story behind Halo than I was the storyline proper. I think it’s the Flood. Just not an interesting enough villain for me, but hey, zombie plagues are in, right?

I have to say, though, announcing games on television is just so five years ago. C’mon Microsoft, we live in the age of the internet. More people will doubtless watch the trailer there than on Spike. Why not do something cool like offer double experience for all Halo games and stream the trailer over live as it’s broadcast?

Microsoft denies impulse buy rumors for Natal

Project Natal announcement.Launch rumors for Project Natal are a dime a dozen, and according to Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson, the latest batch are bunk, too. This last round of rumors said the periph was due out November of 2010, would release with 14 compatible titles, at a price that could be as low as $50. Right.

As Chris Lewis, Xbox’s head of Europe puts things, “Now you know better than to listen to that stuff! We will announce in good time.” Message received, Mr. Lewis. I can’t imagine how Microsoft could possibly get Natal down to the $50 range, or why they would. The install base for the 360 is big enough that people would pay much more for this kind of experience. Think about the Rock Band sets that regularly go for $200. With a bundled game or two, you can bet Natal will at least break a hundred.

As long as he had the world’s ear, Lewis was glad to keep the hype train rollin’. “I’m not going to be specific about what they might be,” he said. “I will say however we’re committed to ensure those experiences are unique, compelling and very exciting right from the outset. That has to happen and that will happen.” Don’t worry you little heads over a release date – just know that when we get one, you’ll be rushing to mark your calendars.

Sports Authority to start selling Wii and Wii Fit

The Sports Authority.Looks like Sports Authority doesn’t want to miss out on the Wii Fit craze. The sporting goods retailer plans to start selling the exercise game along with Wii consoles at select stores. Kinda funny that the announcement comes shortly after the American Council on Exercise called results from Nintendo’s popular fitness series “underwhelming,” no?

“Sports Authority recognized that the Wii console is a product that can help you stay active and have fun with your family at the same time, which is why the retail partnership with Nintendo is a perfect fit,” said Sports Authority president David Campisi. Yeah yeah, Campisi, we don’t need you to sell us on the Wii. No matter what store the thing is in it’s going to move, so it was pretty smart for you to pick the thing up. Hell, Dell was selling them for a while.

Paid game subscriptions are in 14% of American homes

World of Warcraft at work.Americans might be cutting back on video game spending during the recession, but that doesn’t apply to games they’re already paying to play according to NPD’s latest research. The firm released a report today that claims 14% of American households have an active subscription to an online game. Notice the lack of a qualifier like “gaming” or “with broadband” attached to homes. No, that’s 14% of all American homes, people.

The number shows a seven percent gain year over year in subscription entertainment, whereas physical media like newspapers and magazines fell two percent. “Consumers are clearly looking to the value offered by entertainment subscriptions and like what they get for their money; plus, new technologies and products have helped bolster data plans and other newer kinds of subscription-based services,” said Russ Crupnick, an entertainment analyst for NPD.

Doubling subscription growth is obviously a huge win for the industry, maybe bigger when you consider it against something like cell phone data plan subscription, which only rose three percent since last year to a measly nine percent of the consumer base. That’s right, smartphone nerds, you’re getting crushed by World of Warcraft players.

PS3 to get Facebook update in 3.10 “soon”

Facebook for PS3.The Playstation 3 blog has officially announced Facebook integration with the firmware 3.10 update. By downloading the update you’ll be able to link your PSN account to your Facebook account, including updates for Trophy and Playstation Store activity. The update also gives developers the ability to include Facebook updates for certain achievements made in-game.

There’s no date associated with the announcement other than “soon,” which is funny considering the Xbox Live update adding Facebook integration comes out, oh, tomorrow. The rest of the update is just a bunch of UI tweaks, mostly to undo some of the fugly color changes that came with 3.00. There’s also a nice photo update that allows you to see more photos. Easier media browsing is pretty much always a good thing.

Almost forgot, the live feed updates for in-game accomplishments can be patched in for already released games.
