Champ of the Week: Morgana Wrapup

With the beginning of another week comes the end of Morgana’s time in the limelight. I really enjoyed playing her for the Champ of the Week this week. She has great farm potential and a solid teamfighting kit. With the right team, she can be a real force on Summoner’s Rift.

I’m going to let the video do most of the explaining. I had a lot of solid play with Morgana this week. Most of my mistakes were related to either using Black Shield a little too early or missing my Dark Binding. It’s frustrating to have so much of her damage tied to such a slow skillshot. If you miss that shot, her Tormented Soil leaves a bit to be desired.

My Morgana Build

I take one of two build paths for Morgana – Doran’s Ring stack to Deathcap rush or Rod of Ages to Deathcap. I think in most cases I was better served by the RoA. She farms so well early in the game that RoA is easy to come by and useful all game. The Catalyst procs also saved my ass more than once. From there I was going with Rylais, the occasional Will of the Ancients, and Void Staff if the enemy team was stacking magic resistance. I tried a tanky Deathcap -> Glacial Shroud -> Banshee’s Veil build, but it just didn’t bring enough damage as a mid AP carry.

I also don’t take Zhonya’s. Unless my team has a Malphite or Amumu or even Wukong, I find it’s better to be able to move with whatever targets I’ve Soul Shackled that I consider to be important. That’s part of what makes her ult great – it deals initial damage and then allows Morgana to move toward the most important targets for a stun. You just have to hope your team follows along.

If I Could Change One Thing
I’d be wary to change much about Morgana, mostly because she can be so hard to stop in mid. I think even a small change could help her deal more reliable champion damage. I would like to see Tormented Soil get the Spirit Fire treatment – give it half of the duration damage up front, and let the rest of the ticks debuff magic resist and deal the rest of the damage. I know I picked off an Ezreal with Tormented Soil in the video, but having the extra burst would be really nice.

That does it for this week’s Champ of the Week. I’m hoping things will get smoother as I continue with the videos. Subscribe to the channel on YouTube for updates as soon as the video goes live.

Riven Patch Delayed

I know this is going to come as a shock, but the Riven patch has been officially delayed by 24 hours. It remains unclear what caused the delay, whether or not this will affect the end of Season One (though I would bet it will), and whether or not there’s a plan in place if ELOs decay tomorrow.

Here’s the official quote from RiotRara in a post made late Monday night/early Tuesday morning:

Our release team has confirmed that an extra 24 hours is needed to ensure quality release. There will be no downtime tonight for the Riven patch. We are sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Needless to say the forums are displeased, as I think they have every right to be. This is incredibly late notice for what was supposed to be a substantial patch. Hopefully we’ll hear more from Riot tomorrow.

Current Affairs: Riven gets a splash art rework

The community reception of Riven’s original artwork (still viewable here) was less than warm. In a move I certainly didn’t expect, Riot had an artist redo the splash, which is now at the top of this post, to look a little bit less awkward.

I’m a little surprised people think she looks so much better now. If I had any complaints about the original Riven splash, it would be the awkward pose and the fact that she’s just not very interesting. They fixed the awkward pose. Still not very interesting, though. She’s still just wearing a toga and carrying a weird looking sword.

All the same, it’s nice to see Riot make the change. Part of the appeal of my favorite champions is no doubt the splash art. I’m sure players looking forward to Riven will appreciate the new art.

FG LoL Mondays are on – Get your Silver Rating!

FG LoL Mondays

Tonight we’re going to be doing the Fearless Gamer League of Legends Monday a little differently. All signs point to tomorrow being patch day, which means the end of Season One. I know several of you are extremely close to a Silver rating in Arranged 5v5, and I’d love to help you toward that goal. Tonight we’ll be dedicating FG LoL Mondays to getting at least a silver for any that are interested.

You’re welcome to join if you aren’t trying for Silver and we need another spot. Please be ready to bring your very best game. We will be planning out strong comps and focusing to play the best game we possibly can. If you reach your Silver rating, feel free to bow out at any time. Remember, though, you have to play at least 10 games before downtime to get rated. If you’re just getting started tonight, it’s probably too late.

If, by some occurrence, we have comps that want to continue past Silver and go for Gold, I’m all for it, but we won’t go that route until we at least get anyone who is available and within striking distance of Silver a shot at that ranking. Jump online around 9:15pm EST so we can get a feel for who is around and how many points people need. Hope to see you tonight!

Have you picked up Artic Warfare Caitlyn?

As many of you know (I’ve actually seen a few of you in game with it), a new Caitlyn skin is available for free. It’s free if you have a subscription to PC Gamer (or a cell phone with a camera, or, you know, a pen) and if I remember correctly it’s going to be made available in the in-game store. Apparently the issue of the mag costs $9, but it also includes a look at dominion and a sneak peek at the champion after Riven: Magus.

Have you picked up your Arctic Warfare Caitlyn yet? I’ve been checking my local newsstands for the November issue of PC Gamer but nothing yet. Everyone still has October on the shelves. The official street date isn’t until the 13th, so don’t dismay if you haven’t found one.

Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the Morgana wrapup video. Got some good footage this week.
