Microsoft Opens Opt-In Style Live Preview Beta

Xbox Live downloadable games. There’s a lot of pride and one-upping that comes along with beta testing in the video game world. It’s not exactly the same for OS upgrades, but for the super nerds out there, OS betas sport the same clout.

Microsoft has just unveiled their version of an OS beta via Xbox Live update previews. To sign up, just sign in to Live using your Gamertag, fill out the Xbox Live Update Preview Sign Up survey and you’re good to go. From there, Microsoft will select “multiple thousands” to participate in the preview for load testing.

What’s in the update? You’ll get access to the new Games on Demand section, Netflix Movie Parties, and Avatar Awardables. Not a bad lineup for the new update. The program will be open to both Gold and Silver members, with preference given to the Golds. Microsoft said they’ll be contacting people who have been awarded a spot in about a week. Stop back and let us know in the comments if you’re one of the lucky few (relatively speaking, of course).

US Video Game Sales Plummet with the Recession

Video game sales on the decline.Research group NPD has put out some staggering numbers for the video game industry as a whole in June. Their report claims hardware and software sales fell a staggering 31%, in keeping with several other consumer markets.

The less surprising news is the sales breakdown from June. The Wii remained on its pedestal, selling 362,000 units. The Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3 remained in their respective 2nd and 3rd positions. Nintendo’s DS continues to crush the PSP, selling 767,000 units as compared to the 164,000 PSPs sold.

Personally, I don’t find the drop particularly disconcerting, mostly because it’s industry-wide and, frankly, world-wide. Most markets aren’t looking too hot, and without any major releases in June (Prototype only sold 600,000 units – hush, fanboys) the industry can’t really hope to see big sales. The decline is, however, the largest since 2000. I’ll be interested to see how the rest of the year pans out.

Madden 10 Demos Coming for End of Month

Madden 10 cover.Madden 10 has already gone gold, leaving just one question to my mind: Is the game any good? I think we all knew it was going to sell, regardless of what’s actually inside the box. Luckily, though, EA is giving people a chance to play the game before the August 14th release.

On July 30th, both Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will be able to download the regular demo, which features a night game between the Cowboys and the Giants during a snowstorm. Nothing like snow and specular lighting to show off a game’s new looks, right?

Those of you who went out and preordered from Gamestop will get an extra special treat. For starters, you get your very own demo, available just one week from today – July 23rd. That demo hosts the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Arizona Cardinals in a rematch where you can prove just how bad the cardinals really were. Make those twenty minutes count. We wouldn’t want Kurt Warner to get a big head.

Downloads will be available at midnight.

Battlefield 1943 Sees Huge Launch, Coral Sea to Unlock Soon

Battlefield 1943 logo.I’ve been stuck away from home this weekend for a few family events, which means I’ve been missing out on the absolute carnage taking place over Battlefield servers. In the first day of action alone there were more than 5 million kills recorded (for the 360 alone!), pushing everyone ever closer to the ‘Coral Sea’ map unlock, which requires total kills of 43 million for each platform. As it stands, the 360 market is well ahead of the PS3.

It’s not surprising to see Xbox Live numbers topping those of Playstation Network. What is surprising is the sheer number of hours, well, years actually, people logged on 1943’s first day. How much time, you ask? How about 29.45 years on the first day. Yes, just shy of the 30 year mark.

As VG247 put it, you lot should probably go outside.
