Modern Warfare’s Ghost might get a spin-off

Modern Warfare 2's Ghost.I’ve only played through a few levels of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign, but it’s easily some of the best FPS campaigning I’ve enjoyed. Flashy guns, complicated situations, and characters with a whole bunch of issues always makes for an interesting story. Interesting enough, in fact, that Infinity Ward is thinking about giving one of those guys a solo gig. Yes, rumor has it that Ghost, the creeper with the skull mask, just might get his own game.

According to Craig Fairbrass, the voice-actor who played Ghost in MW2, things are looking like this: “I’m now voicing a guy called Ghost, who now just got a spin-off comic of his own and they’re talking about another little game to go with it.” Fans of the series probably got that little six-part comic, but does he mean the same thing by “little game?” Could Infinity Ward be looking at an iPhone game? It doesn’t seem likely that they would make a full-blown spinoff for a series that’s not typically character driven. Who does Ghost think he is, anyway, Master Chief? Puh-lease.

Netflix for PS3 will require discs until the end of next year

Netflix for the PS3.So the PS3 is finally going to get Netflix streaming, but it’s like the backwoods, broke down version, and that’s not going to change any time soon. For PS3 owners to stream videos they’ll need a special disc in the drive, a handicap that won’t be lifted until late next year.

I have no idea why that will take a year of development. Netflix’s Steve Swasey explained the problem to G4, saying, “Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network. Until then, enjoy watching instantly via your PS3 using the instant streaming disc!” Oh boy!

I’ll concede that it’s still a nice feature to have on Sony’s console, but the disc thing is a bummer.

Bioware releases Dragon Age: Origins toolset for the creative among us

Dragon Age: Origins toolset.Bioware’s always been great about supporting the creative communities that develop around its games. The Neverwinter Nights editor was great, and led to all kinds of spinoffs and community created story lines. Hell, Bioware even uses the editor as a tool in their own job applications. They’ve just released the toolset for their latest creation, Dragon Age: Origins, which includes a cinematics editor with lip-sync tools and full camera controls.

The thing looks pretty awesome, and once again should lead to some extremely cool user-generated content. When I first heard about Origins I was sad it wasn’t an MMO. More and more I find myself attracted to games with a significant multiplayer facet, and turned off by single player games. This is the kind of feature that builds a great community around a game that could otherwise have a limited shelf-life for most players, regardless of how cool it is.

You have to have a registered copy of the game (obviously only on PC) to get the download. You can find out more about it over at Bioware’s site.

Gran Turismo 5 cost $60 million in development

Gran Turismo 5 cars.As you might expect, the Gran Turismo team was on site at the SEMA car show in Vegas to promote the game. Creative director Kazunori Yamauchi was there running demos and talking to the press. He dropped a big bomb on a small audience when he estimated the cost of Gran Turismo 5 development at $60 million.

The massive price tag mostly came from the need to develop a new engine for the game. “We threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch … It’s been five years [since the release of] GT4, and that’s the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4,” he said. Yamauchi also deferred the issue of release dates outside Japan to Sony marketing, claiming it’s their decision when the game will get a date. Most people, myself included, are anticipating a first half (though probably second quarter) 2010 release.

The world can’t get enough Modern Warfare

Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition. Now that Modern Warfare 2 is less than a week away, it seems the world is obsessing over any aspect of the game it can find. We’ve had offensive ads and offensive content, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping the masses of Call of Duty fans from flocking to stores to pre-order. Gamestop told Game Hunters that MW2 is now the most pre-ordered game it has ever sold.

Activision has really pulled out the stops to get people interested in the game. Sure Modern Warfare was great, but it’s more than just the game. Walmart, for example, will be selling copies of the game that have been autographed by the dev team to the first 20 people at each of its stores. Details like that really get the nerdy blood flowing, almost as much as the prospect of knife throw kills. If I had the chance at an autographed copy of the game if it meant cutting out the knife throw, you can bet I’d stick with the knife throw.
