Bioware would “love to revisit” Jade Empire

Dawn Star and Silky Fox.For every game announcement from Bioware, I like to keep my fingers crossed that it will be the sequel to Jade Empire. So far, no luck, but lead designer Mike Laidlaw has given me enough cause to keep crossing.

“We will certainly announce it if it’s going to be coming out,” Laidlaw told Strategy Informer. “At this point, Jade Empire is a staff favorite and a lot of us love it, so we’d love to revisit it at some point. But right now, we are very focused on Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2.” Sure it’s not much, but I’ll take what I can get when it comes to Dawn Star. Imagine that in HD boys. Yeah.

The rest of the interview is focused on the upcoming Dragon Age: Origins, so still worth a read.

Halo content planned for the next six years

Halo 2 Master Chief.I forgot to mention this very large and intrusive piece of information from the USA Today article comparing Halo to Star Wars. According to Frank O’Connor, the former Bungie guy who now heads up 343 Industries, the Halo division at Microsoft, the adventures of Master Chief have been planned six years into the future.

“Eventually, it will become very apparent that there is a plan for the way the canon all ties together and the way the comic books and the novels all tie together,” O’Connor said. I’m kinda curious what that means. Is there some nefarious plan lurking behind a story line that could have been really epic if it weren’t so poorly handled? Have I overlooked some love connection between Master Chief and the Gravemind? Tell me your secrets, Frankie!

At the very least we can all rest assured that Microsoft can still spot the gigantic glowing cash cow sitting right in front of it. The very minute you get tired of the latest Halo there’s sure to be another, even if it is a glorified expansion, flying off shelves at $60 a pop.

DotA’s Icefrog gets a job at Valve

DotA wallpaper.I’m a big fan of DotA, so Icefrog’s announcement that he’s now leading a team at Valve is pretty incredible. For those of you who don’t know, DotA is a mod of Warcraft 3 called Defense of the Ancients. It has a huge community base that has recently seen some revival with sites like throneit.com.

Icefrog didn’t have anything definite to say about the new position. “I finally have all the resources needed to do some very exciting stuff that you guys will love” he said. He also confirmed continued development on the popular mod, but hopefully Valve’s backing will create something truly incredible. For now, Icefrog has said he will be working on balance improvements for DotA in 6.64 with the potential for new characters/remakes in 6.65.

Valve drops $25M on L4D2 ad campaign

Left 4 Dead 2.According to a Steam press release yesterday, Valve is dumping a pile of money on L4D2 in hopes of winning big sales. It’s probably going to work, too. The sequel to everyone’s favorite zombie splatterfest is already performing at 300% in pre-orders of the original. Gabe Newell is calling the game the fastest selling title in Valve history.

The first Left 4 Dead got a similar treatment, though only at $10 million. That game was the top selling new IP for both 360 and PC for the year. Valve more than doubling the ad money is probably due in part to the success of the original, but also to fight skepticism that the game was being released too close to the original which would mean a loss of support for the older title.

You can get the full press release over at Steam.

CrimeCraft going free-to-play this month

CrimeCraft logo.If you’re sitting around bored as November approaches, fear not. You’ll be able to play what is widely considered a terrible game, just now it won’t cost you anything! Hurray! Yes, CrimeCraft is going free-to-play with an “unlimited free trial” starting at the end of October. The trial will basically be a limited version of the game that the developer hopes will lure you into subscribing at the $5 or $10 level.

Along with the announcement, Vogster Entertainment also promised a big update to game content. From what I’ve read, that update would have to essentially make CrimeCraft a completely different game to save it.
