Win $1,000,000 for pitching a perfect game

A perfect game is one of those once-in-a-lifetime achievements most pitchers dream of but will never fulfill. Supposedly the same goes for MLB 2K buffs, who find it just about as difficult, though admittedly less physically demanding (as in not at all) than the real thing. To honor the first perfect pitcher for its newest game, 2K Sports is offering up $1,000,000 in prize money. Yes, $1,000,000 if you can pitch a perfect virtual game.
MLB 2K10 perfect pitch.
If that’s not a surefire way to get people to crackhead your game, I don’t know what is. It’s not like they have testing centers either. All you have to do is pitch the perfect game and send in proof. Upon verification you’ll get your million bucks. The only limitation is that it has to be done before May 2nd. After that, the offer’s gone.

Plants vs Zombies for iPhone delayed

Plants vs. Zombies. So you’re unwilling to spend the money on Steam for a version of Plants vs. Zombies you can’t take on the go. For a hot minute it looked like you might be in luck, set to enjoy PopCap’s great little tower defense game on the iPhone by the end of the month. Sadly, the game has been delayed, pushed back until mid-February.

The news was delivered via a tweet from the company that included the adjective “*confident*” – stars included – to describe the new launch window. If I were you, I’d save the last couple bucks you have in your iTunes account until next month. You know you want this.

Oh, and until then, consider the League of Legends: Turret Defense game. It’s surprisingly addictive, particularly for a game that has very little to do with its inspiration.

George Hotz may have hacked the PS3

George Hotz. You may know George Hotz as Geohot, the guy who cracked the first iPhone for use on other carrier networks. He’s a boy genius, continuing to work wonders on every version of iPhone software and hardware that’s been released. From the sound of things, he may have also cracked the PS3.

He posted to a new blog this week, saying:

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.

It’s a big step toward complete PS3 modification, but he mentions that it can be difficult to do and made more difficult once Sony is aware of the exploit.

Activision could have had Blizzard for 1/1000th the price

Blizzard logo. Blizzard is about as hot a property as you can have these days. The World of Warcraft developer makes $100 million a month off its MMO alone. That’s why Activision had to pay $7 billion to acquire the company.

Back in 1995, though, Blizzard was just a minnow in the video game pond. It had just put out a little title called Warcraft that would become the basis for a development empire. Davidson & Associates saw the potential and decided to go for it, purchasing the company for a mere $7 million. Bob Kotick spoke with Game Informer about the purchase.

“That year Activision probably had $60 million in revenues. They said they paid $7 million dollars for Blizzard. I’m like ‘Are you out of your minds? They’re like a contract developer! They have Warcraft but what else do they have? You paid SEVEN million! That’s insane!”

“I was talking to [Blizzard founder] Mike Morhaime the other day and I said, ‘You know, I could have bought you for $7 million and instead it was $7 billion.’ He said, ‘Yeah, could you imagine if I had just held out for the $7 billion instead of the $7 million?’”

Kotick sounds like his usual, dickish self. Then again, he did end up paying the $7 billion price tag.

PS3 firmware 3.10 may be borking Blu-ray drives

Burned up PS3.There’s an ever-growing thread on the the Playstation forums that suggests a recent firmware update may be killing the system’s Blu-ray drive. Several forum users have noticed a reproducible bug in which the system freezes at the end of Modern Warfare 2 matches once the update has been applied. The problem then carries over into other games, which has led some users to believe it’s a problem with the drive.

It could be. But this could also be one of those situations where someone comes up with a potential solution or reason for a problem and everyone else jumps on board just to have an answer. It seems strange that a firmware update in conjunction with MW2 would actually ruin a Blu-ray drive. Of course there is the chance, however remote, that all these people having old enough systems that the drives are failing from old age.
