Patch Preview includes Skarner buffs, Gunblade nerfs

Riot posted the patch preview for the upcoming Graves patch some time last night. The video includes some decent champion changes, including Skarner buffs, but it’s missing some key champion nerfs that are long overdue. Gunblade is getting some nerfs, which are aimed at “hyper-carry” hybrids like Jax and Akali, but the changes will only really affect Dominion.

Skarner is getting across-the-board buffs – attack speed per level, mana cost reduction on Crystal Slash, duration increase on Impale. It’s a nice set of buffs that should make him much less mana dependent. Honestly, I think he might become the flavor of the month with these buffs. Skarner was in a decent spot, I think he just needed some mana adjustment. Now I can see him as an overwhelming solo top or jungler.

Corki is getting an adjustment to Gatling Gun that should make the damage output from the skill more consistent. I’m not sure why Corki is on the change list, though I haven’t seen him in many games recently. In fact, the only ranged carry I see with any consistency these days is Caitlyn. I would love to know when we’re going to see a couple adjustments to her kit.

The other serious changes made to the game all have to do with Dominion. There’s less ambient XP so the “hyper-carries” get to endgame more slowly. Gunblade spell vamp no longer stacks, and Gunblade is getting stat nerfs to bring the power benefit more in line with the cost.

I thought it was funny that Phreak played Akali for a large portion of the patch preview and yet there was no mention of nerfing her. I’ve thought Akali’s burst was broken for a while now, and after learning to play her using Westrice’s guide and some practice, I can’t believe she’s remained in the game in her current state for as long as she has. I wouldn’t be surprised if part of the hesitation to nerf her is that a lot of people are playing her now and a lot of those people don’t know what they’re doing. A big part of Akali’s playstyle is wrapped up in prepping her lane opponent for a kill before level six. At level six she outlanes virtually every single character in the game. This isn’t just on Noob Island either; it’s at every level of the game. Akali was used to devastating effect in the New York tournament this weekend and was the biggest reason Team Dignitas beat CLG.

It looks like the most exciting thing coming this patch will be Graves, unless of course you’re a Skarner devotee.

Xerath skins to catch an update

Runeborn Xerath.

I was hesitant to say much about Xerath’s skins on his release, mostly because I didn’t really get a chance to see them in game. After looking at some of the screenshots, though, I’m not sure I would have known if he was skinned or not.

Recent champion releases have been pretty good – there is usually at least one skin with a slightly different model and design – but the Xerath releases were basically recolors. I think part of that has to do with his model; it’s kinda tough to make that model look like more than a recolor without dramatically altering it (maybe he needs a hat).

Riot has heard the community feedback and has plans to make changes to the skins to make them a little more interesting. I’m glad to see them willing to make a change, though I’m sure it will still be frustrating for people who passed on a bundle because the skins were so underwhelming. Maybe the skins will go on sale to account for the updates.

Win a DotA 2 beta key from Gamersbook

DotA 2 splash.

Ever since the announcement that DotA 2 would be releasing “as soon as possible” Valve has been leaking beta keys to various websites for giveaways and to fuel the hype machine. A site called Gamersbook got in touch with me because they thought you guys might be interested in their giveaway and, frankly, I agree.

They have 4 keys, all set to release over the course of the upcoming week. One key will go out on each of the following days: Sunday October 9th, Tuesday October 11th, Friday October 14th and Sunday October 16th, all at 18:00 CET (Central European Time).

The rules for entry are simple enough. You have to make an account at Gamersbook.com and add DotA 2 to your list of played games in the player profile. You’ll also need to hook up with Gamersbook on Facebook or Twitter and do some sharing, liking, or retweeting. Last, you need to suggest a new feature for Gamersbook.com related to DotA 2 or come up with a new slogan for the site.

For the complete set of rules, head over to the Gamersbook contest page. Like I said, the rules for entry are simple enough. If you’re serious about DotA, I’m sure you’re willing to spend the 5 minutes it might take to get a shot at a beta key.

Super Teemo is on duty, on the way

I was cruising some of the red posts on the forums today and noticed a post about a new Irelia skin. I haven’t been looking for mid-cycle skins for a while now, in large part because they stopped being mid-cycle. While I was poking around for the Irelia skin, I figured I might as well have a look at what else was in the mix.

And then I found this. Yes, it’s another Teemo skin. It’s not just any skin, though, it’s…it’s…it’s SUPER TEEMO!

I can’t lie, I’m pretty excited for this skin. Can’t help but wonder if Riot will do something special to announce its release. I’d really like to see more skins in this style – something silly and fun that has nothing to do with warfare. We got another Caitlyn skin this week that’s just another chick with a big gun and an undersized bra. Caitlyn is sort of an exception – it’s tough to come up with really creative stuff for her paradigm – but there are so many options for fun champion skins. The day I see Xin Zhao wielding anything but a spear is the day I buy a Xin Zhao skin to replace Commando.

Xerath patch is now live

The Xerath patch is now live, following a one-day delay from Riot’s typical release schedule. The patch was relatively short on balance changes, the most significant of which were a token nerf to both Lee Sin and Singed and slight nerf to Morgana’s passive and the AP ratio on Black Shield.

I’m calling the Lee Sin and Singed changes “token” because they actually change very little about the game. Singed got a quarter-of-a-second nerf to his Poison Trail, which makes the duration line up with his animation, and a nerf to the CC reduction on his ult. Unfortunately, those things won’t keep him from absolutely dominating lanes. He still gets too many stats from Rod of Ages. The regen from his ult still makes him ridiculously difficult to kill, and Poison Trail will still give him the ability to amass a huge farm.

As for Lee Sin, I can’t believe Riot thinks a 10% nerf to the AD ratio on Sonic Wave/Resonating Strike is going to balance his damage. When’s the last time you saw a Lee Sin stack damage? Never? The problem with Resonating Strike is the execute. The Safeguard nerf is also a little silly. It does nothing to address the fact that Lee can drop 400 damage or so on a target that is standing under a turret without taking any return fire from either the champion or the turret. Sure, those tricks make him fun to play, but OP mechanics are usually pretty fun. Remember when Veigar’s cage could stun for 8 seconds? Yeah, it was fun. It was also horribly broken.

I’ll have more thoughts on Xerath later in the day. So far he seems a little underwhelming. A solid teamfighter, but he’s either going to take some time to learn well or I’m just going to give up on him. I think I’d much rather have Brand on my team. Watch for the impressions post a little later.

What are your thoughts on the patch so far?
