Will the Blood Lord skin resurrect Vlad?

Vladimir has been a hot topic of discussion since release. Even today, when I rarely see him picked, there are still forum threads on a near daily basis wondering when he’ll be buffed, when he’ll return to viability, why he isn’t viable now, and so on. I know CC is all the rage these days, especially when it comes to AP carries, so where is Vlad’s place?

I still occasionally see Vlad do well when his team has enough crowd control to make up for his own shortcomings. He has to be careful, though. Against a strong AP with a stun, Vlad is susceptible to ganks, despite his pool. If he can be forced to burn his Flash early, Vlad’s health costs work against him early, leaving him open for ganks.

As many Rioters have pointed out, many of the solutions to Vlad’s problems are problems in themselves. Fixing health costs may improve his early game, but give him more damage or survivability and we could be rushing back toward the old days of Vlad.

For now, it looks like Vlad fans will have to settle for a legendary skin. Honestly, I can’t say I’ll mind seeing Vlad in a few games sometime soon. Sure beats Morgana.

Fizz Impressions

Fizz splash.

Since the release of Skyrim I haven’t been playing a ton of LoL, but I’ve picked up a few games with Fizz. I was actually pretty excited about Fizz. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a silly champion release, and the classic sword-wielding heroes were getting stale. Also, he summons a shark, which is pretty awesome.

He also has a couple abilities that seem problematic, though. A skill that makes him untargetable that is also a double dash. A percentage-based DoT that gives no indication to the targeted player of what is happening. But…there’s also the shark, which is just really cool. I think Riot had a good idea for a champion but caved a bit on his design with the whole triple dash thing. I’m not trying to say he’s OP but I do think he’s pretty strong and damn frustrating to play against.

He’s fun to play, too, which helps. I know it’s not his most effective build, but I really like attack speed on him. I take a Malady, which gives his Seastone Trident some serious shredding power. I’ve had several fights in which my target thought they had me, but the knockup from my shark buddy and my various DoTs suddenly overwhelm them.

One of Fizz’s great strengths is obviously his mobility. His Playful/Trickster (why this skill needed two names is beyond me) has an 8-second cooldown at max rank, which gives him a lot of survivability and quite a few dashes. That the skill can also dodge projectiles means he can escape most skirmishes without much trouble.

If you want to play a highly mobile champion that doesn’t build Warmog’s/Atma’s, check out Fizz. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of his ratios tweaked in the near future, but if he gets nerfed at all, it likely won’t be very big.

Shyvana Spotlight Impressions

The Shyvana Spotlight is out, as is the character, giving us the first look at the latest champion to join the League. I’m not surprised to see Trinity Force show up on the recommended build for her, but I did think it was cool to see a Guinsoo’s Rageblade on her. I can’t help but wonder if that will be the optimal build, or if players will just build the typical tanky build.

It’s hard to say how I feel about her based on the spotlight alone. She seemed to be doing decent damage, but she doesn’t have any of the more conventional nuke skills. She reminds me of Skarner in that way – appears to do solid damage without any really exciting skills.

I tend to avoid characters like Shyvana, mostly because I have trouble estimating just what I’ll be able to do in a fight. In a lot of the encounters in Phreak’s video I probably would have backed away from kills that he was able to secure. I’m not sure what it is about the slow trickle of death, but it just doesn’t turn me on.

I’m hoping to get a few games with her today to see how she actually feels. Check back for more on the League’s first dragon.

Riot’s birthday celebration includes Surprise Party Fiddlesticks

It’s hard to believe League of Legends has been out for two years now, but when I look at the number of matches I’ve played, I would hope it has been at least that long. I’ve played thousands of games across the different maps and game modes available and enjoyed the hell out of the game. It’s nice to see Riot getting excited about the phenomenon they’ve created. Apparently today should hold a few surprises for us players, not the least of which is the release of Surprise Party Fiddlesticks, the newest legendary skin in the league.

For those that don’t know, Surprise Party Fiddlesticks started as an idea on the forums. A summoner by the name “GreenEyedMonster” and his friends started yelling “Surprise!” one day in vent and so the idea was born. A couple months later and the skin is now live.

It’s awesome, by the way. I picked it up first thing this morning and have since seen it in just about every game. His ult is amazing, but it’s the little details that make it cool. His pinwheel spins while he’s channeling Drain. Drain looks like swirling streamers. He silences his enemies with a balloon animal. Absolutely amazing stuff.

I hope Riot hooked GreenEyedMonster and his friends up with some Riot points or at least a few skin codes. It’s very cool to see a community skin like this make it to live servers.

Dragons coming soon to LoL

It’s finally happening. Dragons are finally coming to League of Legends. I know, I know – there’s been a dragon in League of Legends for a while now, but can I play that dragon? No, I can’t, so why bother talking about it.

The next champion to come to the League will be Shyvana, the Half-Dragon. Her name is a little confusing, mostly because of the graphic that accompanies her post. As you can see above, Shyvana appears to be a full-on dragon. My guess is that the version of her in the comic represents her ultimate. Could she be a Nidalee-style champ with a toggled second form? I would actually love that option. I really enjoyed Nidalee, though I haven’t played her in a while. Keep an eye out for more about her this coming weekend.
