LOTR: Online Wants You Back, Precious

Simpsons playing some LOTR.I’ll just apologize for that title right away. Yes, it was terrible. Sometimes, though, the 80-year-old geek in me wins. On to business. For those LOTR: Online fans out there, Turbine’s running a special deal to coincide with the in-game Summer Festival this year. If you were once a subscriber, you can get back into the game from now until August 24th for free.

If you’re looking to get back behind your scantily-clad she-elf (who doesn’t want to be there, come on), you just have to log in and download the new patch. Form there, it’s free to get to all the summer festivities and you’ll even get the 25% experience bonus granted to all players during the festival. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

Nintendo Killed DoubleSys, The iPhone DS App

Nintendo DoubleSys logo.Remember that neat little DS look alike app that appeared on the App Store not too long ago? Well it got pulled, and fairly quickly, and it turns out Nintendo is to blame.

The news came in the form of an email to CNet columnist Don Reisinger. According to Charlie Scibetta, a spokesman for Nintendo, the company felt it needed to protect its IP rights. “Nintendo respects the intellectual property rights of other companies, and in turn expects others to respect ours as well. Nintendo did seek the removal of this application as we vigorously protect against infringement of our intellectual property rights.”

Nintendo did more than just pull the app. They’ve also pulled a video from YouTube that displayed the app being used. Apparently they didn’t want anyone else getting any smart ideas.

GT5 News Coming “Very Soon”

Gran Turismo 5 looking sharp.According to VG247, SCEE president Andrew House said there would be news on GT5 “very soon.” The comment comes after Sony was quiet about the famed racing franchise during GamesCom this year.

“I am not going to make a prediction on that but I think you will see something on GT5 very soon,” said House. Could that mean the Tokyo Games Show? Seems like an ideal spot to unveil some serious news about the game everyone’s been waiting on for years now.

The weird part about the whole thing is that GT5 was actually playable at GamesCom this year. Sony has also apparently released screens of a few menu and options changes. So why not talk about it? Why not give some inclination that you even care the game exists? I try not to puzzle these things too long because often the logic of the scenario just eludes me. At any rate, hopefully we’ll have some actual news regarding Gran Turismo soon.

Lionhead Announces Fable III With A Short Trailer

Fable 3?With Lord of the Rings-like bravado, Peter Molyneux took the stage at GamesCom to give us the latest in his over-hyped, over-promised series, Fable. The new game, Fable III, sets the player as the king of Albion, poised to make decisions that will change the face of the realm. As always, you can be good, evil, or somewhere in between.

The game actually sounds pretty cool, I just can’t get my hopes up about the Fable projects any more. I’ve actually waited until now to even pick up Fable II. Yes, it looked cool. Yes, I wanted to get it at launch, but frankly, I was pretty disappointed with the original. Molyneux just hyped it so much that it sounded incredible. In reality, the “moral choices” were pretty mundane, and once you started murdering the townsfolk it was a little hard to stop.

I have heard great things about Fable II, but I’m going in expecting the worst game known ot man so that things seem in proportion. With the first, I wanted the best game ever. This time I’ll take the other route. For the third, I’ll finally be able to run in with middle of the road expectations. Check out the trailer below.

PS3 Gets A Price/Weight Reduction

PS3 SlimAs was expected, Sony made a couple big announcement at Gamescom this week. The PS3 got the awaited price reduction and pulled a lipo on the way. Sure, the fat version will still be available, for the new $300 price, but the PS3 costs the same. Why not go smaller, eh?

The new PS3 has all the same specs as the “full-figured” version and adds a 120GB hard drive. There’s also apparently been an FCC filing for a 250GB version, which gives Sony a sorely needed leg-up on Microsoft. With the impending price reduction, it will be interesting to see if Sony can regain some of its market share.

Sadly, with all the same internals, Sony didn’t add backwards compatibility to the mix. I know it’s more complicated than just slapping it on the hard drive, but that announcement would certainly have blown some panties off. This one, though not undergarment-shredding, is still pretty sweet.
