Is PS3 Firmware 3.00 Killing Controllers

DualShock3 in Ceramic White. There’s an ever-growing thread on the Playstation 3 official forums that suggests Firmware 3.00 may be to blame for wireless controller connectivity issues. Initially it looked like it may only be the “ceramic white” DualShock3 model controllers, but now posters think it’s related to third-party knock-offs of the same style.

When the affected controllers are turned on, the console LEDs light up as they should but the controller doesn’t work. Resetting the controller and even plugging them in doesn’t seem to fix the problem. The question that inevitably comes up is whether the lockout was intentional or just a misplaced line of code. My guess would be the latter. It’s not exactly good PR to block knockoff controllers. Even if you don’t like them as a company, chances are a large enough number of your customers like them that you shouldn’t piss those people off.

Keep an eye out for the next few days to see if Sony issues a formal response.

Xbox 360 And PS3 Both Beat The Wii For Once

VGChartz sales for the past week.It looks like the price cuts from both Microsoft and Sony had their intended effects last week. Both consoles, the Xbox 360 and PS3, outsold the Wii for the first time in a long time, thanks to a massive sales boost for both parties.

The story comes from vgchartz.com, which lists the sales figures for each console in the handy chart above. You’ll notice the huge week to week variance for the 360 and the PS3. The 360 bumped 32% while the PS3 rocketed up 103%. All three consoles crowded the 75,000 unit mark.

News wasn’t all bad for Nintendo, though. The DS still topped the charts by a long shot, selling almost 125,000 units. The Wii will likely continue to be outsold, as the price cuts (and the PS3 Slim) were just announced this past week.

Telltale Wants To Get Serious

Telltale CEO Dan Connors. As VG247 has it, Telltale games is looking to announce some more serious games this October. They’ve made a name for themselves with extremely popular and often hilarious comedy adventure games like Sam & Max and, of course, The Tales Of Monkey Island.

“I think there’ll be some combination of things. I think we’ll be sticking with some of the franchises we’ve worked with, and we’ll be announcing some new franchises, probably in some new genres as well, not just comedy.” That’s from Dan Connors, Telltale’s CEO. Connors also cited TV shows like Lost, The Sopranos, and True Blood, saying that the psychological connection and drama was something viewers really enjoyed – something he thinks gamers would like as well.

Whatever their next project, I can’t wait to hear more. Monkey Island has long been a favorite of mine, and I love what Telltale does. Hopefully they’ll keep up the good work.

WoW Faction Changes Go Live At $30 A Pop

For the horde.I really hate the fees that come along with Blizzard services for World of Warcraft. Name changes are a completely absurd $10, server transfers are $25 per toon, and the “re-customization” service, which will include a name change, runs $15. Blizzard made an addition to the list of money-minting scams with the faction change. The service, which a lot of people have been after for some time, will run you a whopping $30. That’s almost 3 months of gameplay on a subscription plan, which is just ridiculous.

While the rest of the services seem to truly be aimed at character customization, and not necessarily just making money, this one looks to be designed to bleed players dry. For starters, there’s no included server transfer. I don’t know about you, but for my part, changing factions to play with other people means changing servers. I would think it’s pretty rare that your friends just happen to play the opposite faction on your server. Changing factions for this reason means you’ll be spending $55 per toon. Pretty rough.

Also, Blizzard is looking to roll out a Race Change feature in the future, at what I assume will be similarly rapacious prices. For a full list of limitations to the new service, check out Blizzard’s two-page FAQ.

Champions Online First Patch Announced

Champions Online hero.Cryptic has announced the first addition of new content to their brand new Champions Online. The game, which launched yesterday in the US and will head to Europe on Friday, features Cryptic’s all new superhero world. The new content, called Blood Moon, adds a spooky spin to the world with zombie uprising, roaming werewolves, and the Undying Lord Takafones coming to town.

I’m glad to see Cryptic adding in-game events so early. Holidays and other festivals were some of my favorite world events in WoW, aside from the really events surrounding expansions. The announcement page for Blood Moon has some interesting warnings – don’t get bit by werewolves or die to zombies or you become part of the horde. I wonder if that’s only temporary or if it’s a permanent change to your hero.

The new content also adds the celestial powerset, which can be used to damage enemies or heal and buff allies depending which way you go.

All in all, I’d say it sounds cool, but I haven’t played the game. Have any of you? Is it worth buying?
