Modern Warfare 2 tops the 2009 US sales list

NPD put out the sales numbers for 2009 with few surprises. The Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest by far, which should be a real shock. What might actually interest you is that Nintendo has nearly every other title in the top 10. Halo 3: ODST made it in at number six, and the PS3 version of MW2 is buried near the bottom.
Other than those few titles, it’s all Nintendo, and these are just the US numbers. Sony can’t be too happy about the fact that there isn’t an exclusive PS3 title on the list.
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360)
2. Wii Fit (Wii)
3. Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
4. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
5. Wii Play (Wii)
6. Halo 3: ODST (360)
7. Pokemon Platinum (DS)
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
9. Madden NFL 10 (360)
10. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)

Xbox 360 And PS3 Both Beat The Wii For Once
Posted by Jeff Morgan (09/04/2009 @ 4:05 pm)
It looks like the price cuts from both Microsoft and Sony had their intended effects last week. Both consoles, the Xbox 360 and PS3, outsold the Wii for the first time in a long time, thanks to a massive sales boost for both parties.
The story comes from vgchartz.com, which lists the sales figures for each console in the handy chart above. You’ll notice the huge week to week variance for the 360 and the PS3. The 360 bumped 32% while the PS3 rocketed up 103%. All three consoles crowded the 75,000 unit mark.
News wasn’t all bad for Nintendo, though. The DS still topped the charts by a long shot, selling almost 125,000 units. The Wii will likely continue to be outsold, as the price cuts (and the PS3 Slim) were just announced this past week.

Xbox Division Sees a 66% Profit Loss
Posted by Jeff Morgan (07/24/2009 @ 2:28 pm)
Microsoft’s Xbox Division may have shipped more units this year than last, but they certainly didn’t make more money. Not by percentage anyway.
This is the type of story that’s a little difficult to quantify, but I’ll do my best to make the mess of it all fairly clear. Yes, Microsoft’s Xbox division is reporting profits to be down some 66% from last year. Yes, they made $161 million less than last year. It’s all sort of difficult to place, though. The company sold 2.5 million more consoles this fiscal year, and Xbox Live subscriptions were up some 73% in June. So while dollar percentages may be down, and yes that’s likely due to some price reductions, it’s tough to say that Microsoft isn’t doing well.
Of course, no one’s doing well right now. The economy has had a taxing effect on our video game industry, but if you look at the full story, Microsoft is doing what I’ll call “okay.” All in all, not a bad quarter, Microsoft.
