We just might get a Queen: Rock Band

Brian May.It’s hard to say whether Queen guitarist Brian May was joking when he called his appearance in Lego: Rock Band “the ultimate accolade, to be portrayed in Lego. My dreams are all fulfilled now.” I guess for a guy like May, though, there probably wasn’t much left on that list before he scratched off the Lego achievement. The guitarist picked up his doctorate in astronomy in 2007.

The bigger news in his recent chat with the BBC is that a Queen version of Rock Band looks pretty likely. May confirmed that the behind-the-scenes discussions are already happening and said, “Yes we’re into it, I think it may happen.” Not the strongest impression I’ve heard about such a game, but it’s definitely good news. For the friends of mine who read this, I’m going to go ahead and call mic on “Don’t Stop Me Now.” Sorry, Todd. It’s mine.

Bioware would “love to revisit” Jade Empire

Dawn Star and Silky Fox.For every game announcement from Bioware, I like to keep my fingers crossed that it will be the sequel to Jade Empire. So far, no luck, but lead designer Mike Laidlaw has given me enough cause to keep crossing.

“We will certainly announce it if it’s going to be coming out,” Laidlaw told Strategy Informer. “At this point, Jade Empire is a staff favorite and a lot of us love it, so we’d love to revisit it at some point. But right now, we are very focused on Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2.” Sure it’s not much, but I’ll take what I can get when it comes to Dawn Star. Imagine that in HD boys. Yeah.

The rest of the interview is focused on the upcoming Dragon Age: Origins, so still worth a read.

Starcraft stabbing should reignite the violence debate

Starcraft folks.Listen up crazy people – stop playing video games. You’re making it very difficult for us to keep the “video games cause violence” thing out of the media. Case in point: a Swedish Starcraft player recently stabbed a young girl repeatedly after his internet connection died.

Apparently this budding Casanova has a fairly serious mental condition, of the type that will encourage you to inflict harm on a girl walking down the street when you can’t get your zerg fix. He’s now under psychiatric care after the prosecutor failed to get charges up to attempted murder.

I don’t read Swedish, but according to SK Gaming, a major news outlet reported the story as though Starcraft somehow led the boy to pick up the kitchen knife and run outdoors. So please, crazy folks, stop encouraging this kind of shoddy journalism. It’s just too tempting for a newspaper to pass up.

PSP Go piles on the headaches

sony_psp_go_headacheFor all I thought was wrong with the design of and idea behind the PSP Go, Sony almost talked me out of my disbelief. I thought maybe, just maybe, the 10-year plan was something I just couldn’t understand. Turns out it’s just that, something I don’t and will likely never understand, and something that just isn’t working.

The PSP Go has launched to mediocre reviews, which is no surprise considering it’s essentially an aesthetic overhaul. But Sony has also botched the launch, with several features not working as expected and a long update system before the device can even be used. As Destructoid’s Jim Sterling experienced, “I have been in my house for an hour… an hour… and I have done nothing but download, rip, copy, install, update, install, rip, copy, install, install and install.” That’s a hell of a first experience to give user, most of whom are likely among Sony’s most loyal customers. The people buying the PSP Go at launch aren’t likely to be the people who’ve never owned one or even thought about one. They’re the ones interested in or committed to the platform.

To make matters worse, Sony also failed to deliver on a launch promo for European customers. If you bought a PSP overseas, Sony also gave you a voucher to download your choice of three games for free. Unfortunately those downloads were locked to the device on which they were downloaded. That means no transferring from your PS3 to your shiny new PSP – again, a big problem for Sony’s loyal few. As things stand, the problem still hasn’t been resolved, so a lot of players are stuck with unplayable games sitting on PS3 hard drives.

On top of it all Sony killed the UMD trade-in program, which really could have changed things for the PSP Go. A cosmetic upgrade is a fine thing when it allows for the use of old media. By not giving PSP owners a method by which to upgrade to the new device, Sony again screwed it’s most profitable population – the hardcore loyalists.

I’m sorry Sony fans, but if there’s one message buried just below the surface in all of this it’s that Sony doesn’t want you. Sony thinks it can survive without you. It’s another plan I’ll gladly admit I don’t understand, and probably never will.

Forza 3 leaked to P2P sites

Forza 3 at GameShadowAccording to Koku Gamer, Forza 3 has been leaked in its entirety to P2P sites across the web. The two disc download comes in at 13GB, supposedly granting access to the full game. The game is definitely one of the most hotly anticipated of the year, likely in part, as Koku mentions, to the excellent critical reception for Forza 2.

There’s really not much to be said about the leak. Sure, Turn 10 will claim that it’s part of the reason for high game prices, though we know it’s not nearly as big a factor as profits. Pirates will claim their right to download content if the developer is dumb enough to let it leak. And publishers will continue mashing together bundles with the hopes of deterring would-be pirates. None of it is very interesting, if you ask me.
