LoL: Some losing streak stats

Defeat screen. It’s a lot of fun to go on big winning streaks in League of Legends. I’m sure it’s happened to most of you at some point. You know that feeling, where you just can’t seem to lose. You’re playing Katarina for the hell of it and going legendary, running AP Yi and somehow still pulling wins. It’s a great feeling, and I love writing about the stats in those crazy streaks.

Then we have the losing streaks. They are the complete and total opposite of fun. They are unfun. They are joyless. They can be so painful they’ll make you take a break from the game for a week at a time. I’m in such a losing streak, and though I’m not giving up the game, I thought it would be cool to post some stats about my latest big losing streak.

Let me start by saying that my teammates have not been holding up their end of the bargain. I know, everyone says that, but in most every game I’ve lost recently I’ve had a solid farm and in some cases a pretty decent score. Despite the facts, though, I’ve been losing a lot – I’m down from 75 games over .500 to just 64, all in the last four days. Like I said, it’s been rough. At one point I had lost eight in a row.

Here’s the stat list on my most recent 10:
Defeat: 0-3-0 Karthus
Defeat: 4-5-5 Tristana
Victory: 3-1-5 Tryndamere
Defeat: 5-5-6 Twisted Fate
Victory: 10-0-3 Kennen
Defeat: 4-1-1 Ashe
Defeat: 1-8-5 Soraka
Defeat: 5-0-4 Nidalee
Defeat: 0-1-0 Soraka
Defeat: 3-3-2 Singed

For the most part it’s not a bad spread of stats. Granted, that Soraka game was pathetic, but my deaths were situational, usually I was trying to save a teammate that had run off solo or attempting to get my team to commit (for some reason our Shen refused to taunt anyone unless he was directly on top of them). We were never grouped up so one person would get burnt and I would blow everything I had trying to keep that individual alive and have nothing left for the teamfights. It was a bad game.

The thing that really bothers me about this particular streak of losses is that my team tended to lose the game in the laning phase, before anything could actually happen. I was either stuck mid watching both of my side lanes feed or standing in a lane next to someone to whom I was typing furiously, begging them to play more conservatively.

Whatever the reasons, though, you have to take the good with the bad, especially if you’re going to solo queue. Here’s hoping things turn around soon.

LoL: Kennen burnout hit me hard

League of Legends lineup.I love Kennen, I really do, but in my winlust I may have overplayed him. It was an admittedly excellent run. I won eleven games in a row and seeing that little ninja’s glowing eyes next to a full list of green “Victory” snapshots was pretty fantastic. The thing I love most about LoL isn’t finding one champ to suit me, though, it’s the variety in the champion list, so I figure it’s time I branch out once more.

It’s been a bit of a rough go so far. I’ve played as Trist, Taric, Mundo, Ashe, Alistar, Shen, Amumu, Shaco, and Corki and only won about half of those I’ve played. Part of the problem has been comp. I was so focused on playing toons I hadn’t touched in a while that I let team comp go out the window. In one 5-man last night we didn’t have any AOE mage love. None. There’s not a doubt in my mind that we would have won had I played Kennen or Annie or Fiddle but instead we were handed a pretty tough loss to a team we outskilled.

On a high note, I’ve finally unlocked every toon in the game except Eve (who I will never unlock and never play, but that’s another post entirely). I was sitting on 7400 IP after my Kennen purchase and subsequent winning spree, and I still had Tryndamere, Cho’Gath, Kayle, and Janna to purchase.

Things are looking good for a couple games this evening, so hopefully I can rectify my losing situation. A buddy is looking to pick up Fiddlesticks so it would be great to support him with Malphite or Alistar. Of course I’ve never played Janna so I might give her a shot as well.

LoL: Coming back from a losing streak

Ashe is about to die.I have a fairly large base of friends playing League of Legends now, mostly thanks to my shameless plugs every time we’ve spoken over the last several months. Of those people I was the first to hit 30, so I get asked most of the questions regarding strategy, hero choice, etc. The big question of late, though, is what to do when you get into a losing streak.

Games like LoL tend to ebb and flow quite a bit. I often feel unstoppable for as many as ten games, only to turn around and lose the next ten because of sloppy play and unskilled teammates. Things are never completely out of your hands, though, and a little focus can save you a lot of frustration.

First off, take a look at your team comp. It sounds really basic, but it’s a mistake I see from almost every team. You cobble together a few wins and think you must be so skilled you can win with any comp. Not so, and it’s usually the base reason behind a streak of losses. Make sure you have a balance of range, nuke, dps, and meat.

You also need to take a look at lane comps. A balanced team means nothing if you have a lane with no disable. Try to put at least one disable in each lane and if you have spares, pair one lane for ganking. That lane can be responsible for pushing tower first and then roaming to help the team.

Lastly, take a look at your summoner spells and tune them to account for you team’s weaknesses. If you’ll have trouble laning early, consider Fortify on at least 2 champs. Exhaust is great for shutting down the enemy Twitch or Shaco in team fights, and Cleanse can help save you in big team fights. Avoid relying on spells like Flash and Heal because they can quickly turn into a crutch that you’ll be unsure how to play without.

Once you’re back on your feet, try to at least keep a few of these things in mind. If you have a regular team to roll with you can be a little sloppy, but playing pugs, you need every advantage you can get.
