Driving the Nissan GTR at the GT Academy finals

As part of the trip to the GT Academy finals, the media had a chance to get behind the wheel of Nissan’s strongest racers, the 370Z and the GTR. We actually got to drive the Nissan GTR Black Edition, the only model currently in the US in light of the circumstances in Japan. Oh, we also drove the Juke.

We got to take the cars through an autocross course, which is an exhilarating experience. It was my first time on that kind of course, unlike the auto media that was there. Still, I managed a couple decent runs, most notably in the GTR.

After the autocross we were taken around the oval by a pair of professional drivers from the the Richard Petty Driving Experience. As far as I could see, we hit 105 in the 370Z and about 120 in the GTR. That doesn’t sound fast on a straightaway, but around a banked curve it felt like madness.

I’ll have a full writeup of the experience tomorrow. For now, enjoy the gallery.

No FG LoL Monday tonight (obviously)

Sorry for the late notice here guys. Though I am dying to see all of your Nocturne skills, I drove some 11 hours to get back home just to leave again tomorrow. I’ll be flying to Orlando in the morning to check out the GT Academy finals with Nissan and Sony. For those who don’t know, GT Academy is a reality show that takes the best Gran Turismo drivers in the world and pits them against each other in several virtual and real world driving scenarios. The winner of the show goes on to become a real life GT circuit driver.

I’ll be covering the event Tuesday and Wednesday and will be back home once again Thursday midday. Until that time, expect some pictures of the GT Academy event and check in with me @jeffplaysgames on Twitter (yes, I changed my username).

Nissan & Sony Give Gamers the Chance to Go Pro in Real Life

By the time I had watched thirty seconds of that video, I knew Nissan and Sony had done something epic. The two companies have paired up to offer the best Gran Turismo 5 drivers from around the nation a chance at becoming a real world, flesh-and-blood race car driver. Just look at those spinouts. I can’t wait.

Here’s a little clip from the press release:

GT Academy will challenge gamers and racing fans alike across the U.S. to compete in a series of online time trials in pre-selected Nissan vehicles in Gran Turismo 5. Throughout the course of the competition, participants will earn free digital content just for playing, as well as have an opportunity to win prizes for winning regional time trials. The top 32 virtual racers in the country will compete in the live national finals event scheduled for March 2011 to become one of 16 GT Academy finalists. The 16 finalists will compete against each other in a series of challenges, including behind the wheel of real Nissan race cars, for a chance to become a professional race car driver as the GT Academy winner for the U.S. The winner will have the opportunity to train with elite race car drivers at international tracks and race as part of a professional team.

It’s definitely an interesting concept. For more info, check out our post on the Bullz-Eye blog.
