LoL: Calm before the Garen patch storm

Eye of the hurricane.Sorry for the late post here today, readers. Between a couple new work projects and the iPhone 4G leak I was crazy busy today. Also, there hasn’t been much happening, but sometimes even that can be worth talking about.

I do feel like the community has settled into a pre-patch lull over the past week or so. New champions have been coming in such a flurry that it’s nice to hit that break in between patches where there just isn’t a whole lot going on. It seems to be a result of a few things.

First, Kennen appears to actually be in a good spot as I have suggested here and on the forums. Without many changes to the new hero people seem content to either ignore him or play him – kind of a perfect scenario. Second, Garen isn’t all that interesting. There was a lot of hype surrounding the other heroes and Garen just doesn’t have the same pizazz. I’m going to purchase him on launch and play him, mostly for my own curiosity and testing (and the fact that I have more than 10,000 IP banked and nothing to spend it on), but I doubt he’ll get a lot of playtime in my regular games. In my mind he’s a lot like Mordekaiser, with just a hair more utility from that silence. You know, I never realized how similar the two are until I wrote that (another post for the morning so be sure to check back).

Above all, I think the calm before the inevitable storm comes from the game’s maturation. From what I’ve seen the servers have been a bit more stable over the past week or so, and I’ve actually seen my ping improve by quite a bit in some cases. I hate to make the call too early, but I think Riot may have finally hit its stride. That’s not to say the game wasn’t succeeding – it absolutely was – it’s just that the success was outpacing development for a while there and we might finally be approaching equilibrium.

LoL: Garen patch is live on the Test Realm

Garen screen. The patch that introduces Garen has officially gone live on the Test Realm. So far I’ve only had the chance to sneak two games, one of which crashed in epic fashion so I’ll have to hold out on the real feedback. I can give some impressions, though, regarding the newest addition to the League of Legends list of champions.

First, I can’t help but think that Garen is the Tryndamere remake and they’re just going to delete Tryndamere from the game. Obviously I don’t really believe that, but if you look at his skills there are some perplexing similarities. Judgement is like Spinning Slash, but with much greater damage output potential and slow immunity. Courage reduces incoming damage (a bit like Mocking Shout). He has an active skill that deals extra damage and crits and, just for good measure, silences too. His ult is definitely different but for overall “feel” I’d say the two are a close pair.

I’ll try to get another game in tonight but I’ll definitely have some more detailed analysis on the Garen playstyle tomorrow.

LoL: Garen skill list and impressions

Garen, the Might of Demacia.I made it home from my weekly volleyball league this past week in time to catch the majority of the Garen livestream. It was a little tough to tell what was going on, in large part because Riot’s Jeff Jew was trying to talk about everything so quickly that a lot of what the champion actually does was lost. I picked up on some of the specifics in the Q&A after the livestream and luckily the guys at LoL Wikia have catalogued everything. Here’s a look at the Garen skill list:

Innate (Passive): Regenerates .6 percent of Garen’s max health per second after 5 seconds of not receiving or dealing damage.

Decisive Strike: Garen gains a small speed boost and his next attack will deal bonus damage and silence the target. This ability can critically strike.

Commanding Presence: (Passive) Increases armor and magic resistance by 0.5 per minion kill. (Active) Reduces incoming damage by 15-35 percent (depending on skill rank) for a short period of time.

Keeping the Peace: (Toggle) Garen spins around, dealing area of effect damage that scales with attack damage. He is able to move during the ability and cannot be slowed. This ability can critically strike.

Demacian Justice: Deals magic damage to an enemy based on the amount of health they’re missing (1 damage per 2 missing health). Cannot be used during Keeping the Peace.

For an “awe-inspiritng, furious maelstrom at the forefront of an assault,” I’m a little underwhelmed. The best thing about him seems to be his passive MR/armor gain, which from the sound of the livestream is capped, though maybe I heard things wrong. Other than that his initiation combo seems to be a speed burst -> whirlwind combo for slow immunity, which doesn’t make him immune to stuns and certainly won’t keep him alive unless you blow the damage reduction at the same time, in which case I’m pretty sure everyone will be crying OP. The fact that his abilities can crit will likely be decent on SR and overpowered on Treeline and his ult is just another finisher. As soon as he’s up on the test realm I’ll give him a playtest and let you know what I think.

LoL: Another hero approaches (Garen)

Garen. While we’re all waiting on the Kennen release, Riot has seen fit to grace us with yet another new champion, this time in the form of a complete omgwtfbbqpwnsauce tank. His name is Robert Paulsen. His name is Robert Paulsen. His name is Robert Paulsen. Err…his name is Garen, the Might of Demacia. From the sound of things he hails from the land of Poppy.

I’m excited to see his skill list. I’ve really fallen in love with Shen because of his great tanking skills. The chatter that his Feint could get a remake is just about the most exciting thing coming to the game (not really). Anyway, I’m glad to have another tank. Hopefully this one will be viable for some high-tier play.

This Friday at 6PM PST Riot’s Jeff Jew will be debuting Garen’s new skills on Xfire. The official post promises a “unique gameplay style.” Any bets on what it will be?
