Funcom offers “unlimited” Age of Conan trial
Posted by Jeff Morgan (12/15/2009 @ 3:06 pm)
Funcom is offering up a holiday special on Age of Conan, granting conditionally free access to anyone who downloads the client and creates a new account between now and January 1st. The developer calls it an unlimited trial, “a special holiday offer to anyone who wishes to experience the sexy and savage world of Conan.”
You only get to play for free up to level 20, at which point Funcom hopes to lure you into spending money on the game. Level 20 is pretty generous, but I found even getting to that point a chore. I’m pretty sure I quit the game somewhere around level 11. The “unlimited” is in there because at level 20 you could conceivably start all over, playing through the same content you’ve already seen. I know people do this in MMOs, but usually not until they’re significantly into the game.
Check the full press release for more details.

Champions Online goes free to play this weekend
Posted by Jeff Morgan (10/25/2009 @ 2:06 pm)
If Halloween isn’t really your thing or you just prefer to dress up a digital version of yourself, you’re about to have a great weekend. Instead of running around in a drunken costumed craze, Cryptic will allow you to play Champions Online for free.
The free weekend is part of a promotion for the game’s first patch, Blood Moon. If you don’t remember from my original spot, the game adds the typical Halloween horror to your online experience: zombies, werewolves, a demonic lord parading about. Sounds like a blast if you ask me.

LOTR: Online Wants You Back, Precious
Posted by Jeff Morgan (08/20/2009 @ 10:02 pm)
I’ll just apologize for that title right away. Yes, it was terrible. Sometimes, though, the 80-year-old geek in me wins. On to business. For those LOTR: Online fans out there, Turbine’s running a special deal to coincide with the in-game Summer Festival this year. If you were once a subscriber, you can get back into the game from now until August 24th for free.
If you’re looking to get back behind your scantily-clad she-elf (who doesn’t want to be there, come on), you just have to log in and download the new patch. Form there, it’s free to get to all the summer festivities and you’ll even get the 25% experience bonus granted to all players during the festival. Not a bad deal if you ask me.
