Redbox Adds Video Games

Redbox DVD ready for return. If you’re a serious sociophobe when it comes to renting video games you have reason to rejoice today. Redbox, maker of those red…boxes that allow you to be the subject of much animosity as you slowly browse for your DVD of choice, has added video game kiosks to its manless rental station armada.

For now the selection is pretty slim, and the prices are a little steep. Games will run you $2 a night (by comparison, Blockbuster gives you 5 nights for $9 – then again, they’ll also make you talk to someone; is it just me or have Blockbuster employees gotten ridiculously annoying?) for Wii, DS, 360, PS2, and PS3 titles. Of course they did just launch the service, so selection is likely to improve, but price probably won’t. The stations are available now in the Reno, Nevada area.

Sports Illustrated Subscription Gets You A Copy Of Madden 10

Madden 10 for Xbox 360.If you’re a Madden fan looking to get the latest release, you may want to consider signing up for a year of Sports Illustrated instead. The sports mag is actually giving away a copy of Madden 10 with your yearly subscription for free, and for the console of your choice.

From a financial standpoint it’s a great pick. You get 28 issues of the magazine for $49 (and get yourself enrolled for automatic renewal), plus a bonus Madden documentary and, of course, a free copy of Madden 10 (which retails for $60 for PS3 and Xbox 360). I’m willing to call it $125 worth of merchandise for just under $50.

Remember, the deal’s only good if you live in the US or Canada.

Upgrade Your Avatar From The Comfort Of Your PC

Xbox Live Avatar Marketplace.Bored at work? Bored in class? Bored at a coffee shop? Bored watching your friend trudge through that one-on-one he’s been dying to play? Generally bored? Why not upgrade your Xbox Live avatar from your PC!

That’s one of the new features Microsoft has added to their online Live experience. Now you can buy clothes, add games, and update your avatar, all from your computer. Really, I can only think this would be useful were I incredibly bored some time in the near future. It’s just not the sort of thing I’d be logging in to do unless I was probably somewhere near my Xbox to begin with.

This sort of news makes me shrug because really Xbox Live Avatars aren’t all that different from one another. I don’t even mind that the web version doesn’t let you preview items on your own avatar because really, it won’t look that much different. Mine will just have less hair.

Halo 3 Makes Xbox History

Master Chief doing his thing. This week Halo 3 did something that’s never been done on any Xbox console. The newest release in Bungie’s futuristic franchise (not counting upcoming titles, of course) has sold 10 million units worldwide, making it the 35th game in history to do so and the first on an Xbox console.

The report comes from VGChartz and goes on to cite some less surprising milestones. Did you know Halo 3 was the highest selling single-platform game of the current generation? Of course you did. What on earth would outsell it? Adding PS3 and 360 sales together, though, puts COD4 and GTA:IV above Halo 3. Again, not surprising.

Halo is bound to keep improving on the milestone as prices drop in the face of the Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach releases.

100 Friend Limit Got You Down? Stop Playing Halo 2!

Master Chief is killing your friends list. For too long Microsoft has been the gatekeeper to so much potential fun. I can only have up to 120GB of hard drive space. I can only have an Xbox that lasts for two years before breaking. I can only have 100 friends.

The last, at least, seems to be a bit of a problem with the Xbox Live user base. The real reason you can’t have 100 friends is because too many people still play Halo 2 online. That’s straight from Microsoft, in fact. You see, with so many active subscriptions primarily to play Halo 2, Microsoft would be alienating a huge user base if they decided to suddenly cut support. Unfortunately, there’s also no way for the company to upgrade the current Xbox Live architecture to provide >100 friend support without cutting the cord on that Halo 2 consumer base.

The Microsoft source with the story did say that Halo 3: ODST could be the torpedo that sinks Halo 2 since it would give players two different Halo titles to choose from.

What do you think? Are you still playing Halo 2? Would you understand if Microsoft cut the cord to allow more than 100 friends on Live?
