The world can’t get enough Modern Warfare

Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition. Now that Modern Warfare 2 is less than a week away, it seems the world is obsessing over any aspect of the game it can find. We’ve had offensive ads and offensive content, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping the masses of Call of Duty fans from flocking to stores to pre-order. Gamestop told Game Hunters that MW2 is now the most pre-ordered game it has ever sold.

Activision has really pulled out the stops to get people interested in the game. Sure Modern Warfare was great, but it’s more than just the game. Walmart, for example, will be selling copies of the game that have been autographed by the dev team to the first 20 people at each of its stores. Details like that really get the nerdy blood flowing, almost as much as the prospect of knife throw kills. If I had the chance at an autographed copy of the game if it meant cutting out the knife throw, you can bet I’d stick with the knife throw.

Forza 3 tries to bridge the gap between serious sims and arcade racers

Forza 3 car crash. In case you’ve forgotten, Forza 3 is out today and ready to be driven across the world’s most famous racetracks. The game is unique in that it’s the first advanced driving sim that allows users to dial the experience from arcade racing to full simulation.

Among the many features Turn 10 has placed just a couple menu selections away are the options to toggle auto-braking, suggested driving lines, driving/traction assists, and tire wear. Those options have been in other games, but accessibility was almost always an issue. If you realized a race was too easy or too difficult, you usually had to scrap the whole thing. Turn 10 wants Forza 3 to be for everyone, though, so the controls are almost as close as the accelerator and the brake.

Accessibility doesn’t mean the sim features are missing, though. You still have full control over your rotors, tires, suspensions and the like. All of that for hundreds of cars and you’re pretty much guaranteed you’ll get your money’s worth. Oh, did I mention the game is actually fun? I’ve only played the demo so far, but it’s good enough that I’ll probably pick the game up in the next week or so.

Microsoft cuts third-party memory

Datel Max Memory for the 360.If you’ve been enjoying the benefits of a third-party memory card on your 360, your happy days are numbered. Major Nelson confirmed that the next system update will kill support for those little 4GB flash units that have been saving you benjamins and giving you a way to back up your old saves and profiles.

Obviously storage control is one of the best ways for Microsoft to make money for the Xbox division. A 512MB memory card is still $29.99 and the best bargain for the hard drive is the refurbed 120GB from Gamestop for $99.99. As Microsoft continues down the path of DLC, including games, movies, and TV shows, it better come up with bigger storage options. The largest available is that 250GB hard drive in the Modern Warfare 2 bundle, and it won’t be sold separately, for now at least. When it does become available, I’d expect price to be somewhere in the $175, which is just way too much.

Modern Warfare 2 bundle release date surfaces

Modern Warfare 2 limited edition bundle.Just a week after the 250GB PS3 Slim was announced, that Modern Warfare 2 bundle, the one with a similarly sized hard drive, got a release date. Yesterday both Amazon and Costco posted November 10th for the release date on the bundle.

For $399.99 you’ll get a console with a 250GB hard drive, two wireless controllers in black, and, of course, the game. In keeping with recent SKU changes, the console only comes with standard def. cables, a big letdown for what is otherwise a premium setup. If you’re looking to get your hands on one, please please please don’t overpay for your HDMI cable. You can find them online for less than most value meals.

Gamestop exclusive controller gets official

Gamestop exclusive 360 controller.Major Nelson has a little more to say about that Gamestop-exclusive controller that showed up on the used game dealer’s website earlier this month. It’s a partnership between Xbox and Gamestop and still totally hideous. For some reason Nelson doesn’t mention why the controller is the way it is, but if you look at the Forza 3 intro vid it seems pretty obvious. Recognize anything about that R8? Something look familiar?

The controller will come bundled with a play-and-charge kit for $69.99. That’s an awful lot to pay for an awfully ugly controller. It’s even more when you consider the holiday controller bundle, which gives you the same thing (minus the hideous makeover) plus four Xbox Live Arcade titles.
