George Hotz may have hacked the PS3

George Hotz. You may know George Hotz as Geohot, the guy who cracked the first iPhone for use on other carrier networks. He’s a boy genius, continuing to work wonders on every version of iPhone software and hardware that’s been released. From the sound of things, he may have also cracked the PS3.

He posted to a new blog this week, saying:

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.

It’s a big step toward complete PS3 modification, but he mentions that it can be difficult to do and made more difficult once Sony is aware of the exploit.

EA announces Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Tiger Woods with a trophy. Finally, there’s a corporation in the world that’s willing to move on from Tiger’s sex life and continue to endorse him for what he does best (yes, better than cheating on his wife – he failed at keeping that quiet): playing golf. EA officially announced today that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is in development.

The game will launch in June of this year for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and the iPhone. I really wish there were more jokes to be had at Tiger’s expense, but really I’m just glad that this little saga is at the beginning of its end.

Sure, Tiger’s income looks a lot more like a trickle than the insane waterfall of years past, but it’s better than nothing, right?

PS3 firmware 3.10 may be borking Blu-ray drives

Burned up PS3.There’s an ever-growing thread on the the Playstation forums that suggests a recent firmware update may be killing the system’s Blu-ray drive. Several forum users have noticed a reproducible bug in which the system freezes at the end of Modern Warfare 2 matches once the update has been applied. The problem then carries over into other games, which has led some users to believe it’s a problem with the drive.

It could be. But this could also be one of those situations where someone comes up with a potential solution or reason for a problem and everyone else jumps on board just to have an answer. It seems strange that a firmware update in conjunction with MW2 would actually ruin a Blu-ray drive. Of course there is the chance, however remote, that all these people having old enough systems that the drives are failing from old age.

Gran Turismo 5 demo downloaded over a million times

GT5 Ferrari.Last month Sony took a much anticipated first step toward getting GT5 in the hands of the public by releasing the demo. Since that time, Sony was proud to say the demo has been downloaded over a million times.

First question in my mind: where the hell is the game? It’s been in development forever. And sure, they’ve got new engines and all that, but Microsoft has dumped two new versions of its racing sim on the world in the time it’s taken Sony to get GT5 together.

Then there’s this: A million times? Like one? Only one? Granted, it’s a single platform release, but that’s still ridiculously low for a top tier title. Oh, but that’s only stats for 17 countries participating in some crazy Time Trial Challenge, which doesn’t include Japan, the States, or Canada.

Last question then: why should we care?

Target starts $99 ripoff servce

Target store. In an effort to completely ripoff unsuspecting and technologically challenged individuals, Target will be starting a console setup service. It only costs $99!

Part of the cost is that the service is actually performed by a third party, Zip Installation, but it’s still an absurd purchase. For just $99 they will come and actually plug the console into the TV for you, with proper color matching and all. They’ll also configure the console (it comes “configured” out of the box), enable parental controls for you, set up and optimize your wireless router, register your online accounts, and set up your PC for media streaming.

Never you mind that those things have clear walkthroughs included with every console, and that you might be increasing the cost of your console by up to 50%.
