NCSoft announces Aion Holiday Ascension Pack

Aion box art.I realize all of our news today is about NCSoft, but I figure I have to talk about something other than Modern Warfare 2, right? Today NCSoft announced a new Aion bundle for anyone feeling a little angelic over the holidays. Called the Holiday Ascension Pack, the bundle gets you a bunch of in-game items that vary ever so slightly based on where you purchase the game.

Usually this sort of thing is reserved for pre-orders and special editions. The bundle nets you 20 Lesser Life Potions, 15 Lesser Running Scrolls, and 15 Lodas’s Amulet uses (which is apparently an experience buff). Depending on where you purchase you’ll also get an armor dye from the following colors:

Amazon – Hot Orange Dye
Best Buy – Mustard Dye
Game Stop – True Black Dye
Target – True Red Dye
Wal-Mart – True White Dye

It’s an odd assortment of colors, especially the names, but I wouldn’t turn down free dyes. Along with the bundle, NCSoft has also put 30 and 60 day timecards out to retail so you can give someone a little game time this holiday.

Don’t forget to pre-load L4D2

Left 4 Dead 2 is coming Nov. 17th.With all the hype around Modern Warfare 2, you might have forgotten that the Left 4 Dead 2 launch is right around the corner as well. Sure it’s not going to break those major records that MW2 likely will, but it’s probably going to be awesome. If you’re a PC player, take my reminder and go get to downloading. If you’ve pre-ordered the zombie splatterfest, you can pre-load the game up to the November 17th launch.

Why, you ask? For one, what on earth else does your computer do while you sleep. Two, because the game is almost seven gigs. That’s going to be a long download on launch day. Actually, it’s probably going to be a long download this week, too, but at least you won’t be waiting for hours while your friends are carving zombie face and screaming for your company over Vent. i

You’ll also get 10% off when you pre-order on Steam, along with a special hat for Team Fortress 2. Really, there isn’t a reason not to pre-order.

Penguin to publish Assassin’s Creed novel

Assassin's Creed Ezio flying through the air.Alongside this month’s release of Assassin’s Creed 2, Ubisoft has partnered with Penguin Books to bring us a novel based Ezio’s escapades. Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance will release on November 26th, roughly a week after the game launches.

“This partnership presents at last a way for traditional book-publishing to cross-over with the ever growing and increasingly exciting world of gaming media,” said Penguin editorial director Alex Clarke. I’m not sure what “at last” means in this situation. There have been books based on game franchises for quite a while now.

The description from Amazon is just as over the top as you would expect:

‘I will seek Vengeance upon those who betrayed my family. I am Ezio Auditore da Firenze. I am an Assassin…’ Betrayed by the ruling families of Italy, a young man embarks upon an epic quest for vengeance. To eradicate corruption and restore his family’s honour, he will learn the art of the assassins. Along the way, Ezio will call upon the wisdom of such great minds as Leonardo Da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli – knowing that survival is bound to the skills by which he must live. To his allies, he will become a force for change – fighting for freedom and justice. To his enemies, he will become a threat dedicated to the destruction of the tyrants abusing the people of Italy. So begins an epic story of power, revenge and conspiracy. Truth will be written in blood.

Now imagine reading that for 528 pages. I don’t know that I would make it through.

The world can’t get enough Modern Warfare

Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition. Now that Modern Warfare 2 is less than a week away, it seems the world is obsessing over any aspect of the game it can find. We’ve had offensive ads and offensive content, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping the masses of Call of Duty fans from flocking to stores to pre-order. Gamestop told Game Hunters that MW2 is now the most pre-ordered game it has ever sold.

Activision has really pulled out the stops to get people interested in the game. Sure Modern Warfare was great, but it’s more than just the game. Walmart, for example, will be selling copies of the game that have been autographed by the dev team to the first 20 people at each of its stores. Details like that really get the nerdy blood flowing, almost as much as the prospect of knife throw kills. If I had the chance at an autographed copy of the game if it meant cutting out the knife throw, you can bet I’d stick with the knife throw.

Capcom thinks Lost Planet 2 will be its big hit

Lost Planet 2 jungle.I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Lost Planet. I’m put off pretty quickly by a weak storyline, and the gameplay was a little too repetitive for my tastes. Honestly, I was a little surprised to hear that Capcom was making a sequel, but according to VG Chartz, the original has sold nearly 2.3 million copies (PS3 and Xbox 360 figures combined.

What I’ve seen of Lost Planet 2 looks a lot like the original. It’s an extreme environment, though this time we get lush jungles, with all manner of things to shoot and blow up. Not a terrible premise for a game, but very, very familiar. According to its latest earnings report, Capcom thinks familiar will sell extremely well. More than 50% sales increase well. The report predicts 3.7 million units moved in the second half of 2010.

I think they’re nuts. Sure, sequels tend to outperform the originals, but that’s a huge increase. Lost Planet just doesn’t have that kind of blockbuster flare.
