Wii Gets A Price Cut, Amazon Offers First Deal

Wii's at Amazon. The latest in the string of console price cuts went live today; you can now officially get a Wii for $199, which is $50 off the previous lowest price. As if that weren’t enough to get you to buy, Amazon hopes to be your retailer of choice. The online seller is offering a $25 gift card with every Wii purchase.

You have just under a week to take advantage of the deal, which is only good through October 3rd. You should also make sure you’re buying the console directly from Amazon as third party vendors don’t count toward the deal. You can expect to receive your gift card 10 days or so after purchase, effectively reducing the cost of your next game by 50%.

Wii Price Cut Is Official

Nintendo Wii.There was a Target ad. There was a Toys R Us ad. There was a Walmart Ad. There was a really poorly kept secret Nintendo has finally officially confirmed. Yup, the Wii is getting a price cut this weekend, down from $250 to $200 on September 27th.

This marks the first time in the console’s three-year lifespan that Nintendo has stooped to price cuts. That’s a pretty impressive show of consumer demand. You can get the newly priced console over the weekend with the same contents it has shipped with since day one.
Japan will see the price reduction October 1st. Guess who’s laughing now, Japan? Yeah, it’s us. We might not get a black Wii, but we get the price cut first. Oh wait, yours is still better.

Monkey Island Chapter Three Arrives September 29th

Lair of the Leviathan. If you haven’t yet finished Chapter 2 of The Tales of Monkey Island you should probably get going on that. The third installment arrives September 29th and will be called The Lair of the Leviathan. Lots of piratey goodness in that title.

The release date is only for the PC version of the game. As with The Siege of Spinner Cay, you’ll be waiting on the 360/Wii releases just a little longer.

Along with the expansion of the new game, you can find Guybrush Threepwood’s original adventure, The Secret of Monkey Island on sale from Steam and Direct2Drive this weekend for $5. The sale coincide with Talk Like A Pirate Day, September 19th. The sale will run until the 21st, so you’ve got a few days to decide whether you can part with honest Abe.

Toys R Us Ad Shows $199.99 Wii

Toys R Us Wii ad.>Following months of speculation about price cuts for the other two consoles, it looks like Nintendo will follow suit. This pic from a Toys R Us ad shows the Wii at $199.99, a very attractive price point. Kotaku also reportedly got a look at a Walmart ad showing the same price.

This kind of deal could easily put the Wii back to the top of the sales charts. That puts the bundle, which actually includes Wii Sports, $100 cheaper than the PS3, which jumped to the top of the charts after Sony lowered its price to $299 and released a slim version.

With all of the price cuts coming so far ahead of the holiday season, it makes me wonder what sort of bundles we’ll see later this year. I’d like to think we’ll get some sort of surprise announcement about Natal, but that seems incredibly unlikely.

Madden 10 Sales Are ‘Discouraging’

Madden 10 for the Wii.It looks like the world is finally catching on that Madden doesn’t change much from year to year, and they’ve stopped buying. Sales are so bad, in fact, that even EA is calling the numbers “discouraging.”

How bad is bad? According to IndustryGamers, the Wii version of Madden only sold 67,000 copies in the month of August. In case you don’t remember, EA was supposed to completely rework the game for the Wii because the game just didn’t work on the platform. By this time last year, Madden 09 for the Wii had sold almost twice that number.

Sales for the other consoles looked a good bit better, but still not great for such a major franchise. EA shouldn’t be surprised, though. Why in the midst of a recession would gamers blow money on a game that, as I think I mentioned, doesn’t really change. When the industry’s down, you can bet the first thing to go will be yearly reworks of the same concept.
