Sega’s got your Bayonetta costume solution

Bayonetta full costume. If you’re completely out of costume ideas for Saturday, Sega wants to offer a little help. Because really, what’s hotter than a busty witch dual-wielding Derringers? Nothing, that’s what.

Yes, the costume at right comes from Bayonetta, Sega’s witch-themed shooter set for a 2010 release. The heroine is a sexy mashup of witch, japanese school girl, and kung-fu master. Sega wants to make sure a few Bayonettas make the rounds this Halloween so it put together a little guide for making your Bayonetta as authentic and erotic as possible.

Even if you aren’t looking for a game-inspired costume this year, the page is worth a read. The game looks admittedly cool, but when you consider applying some of the…character design choices…to an actual human, it sounds totally batshit. For example, the description of Bayonetta’s guns reads, “Add-ons include a crystal in its center allowing it to magically summon bullets, as well as a rail on the top of the guns so they can be equipped on Bayonetta’s feet by sliding them into the gap in her high heels.” Just a little food for thought while you’re at your local thrift store this weekend.

USPS worker steals 2200 games from GameFly

GameFly guy looking for his mail.A former Philly mail-handler has been confirmed to be a complete moron. Reginald Johnson admitted to stealing some 2200 GameFly games from Philadelphia addressees before they could be delivered. Johnson’s now facing 12-18 in prison.

I’d love to know how this guy thought he would get away with it. The court valued the merchandise around $84,000, which is pretty noticeable on a merchandise loss report. Add to it the fact that he’s stealing from residents in the very city where he works. Wouldn’t that be the first place GameFly might look? Why not steal from people whose mail goes through several destinations before reaching them. C’mon man, haven’t you seen Catch Me If You Can?

For Johnson’s arrest, police chased him from work until he crashed his SUV, wherein the cops found a duffel with 81 games and another 79 games in the vehicle, along with several consoles and few accessories with receipts from Gamestop.

Starcraft stabbing should reignite the violence debate

Starcraft folks.Listen up crazy people – stop playing video games. You’re making it very difficult for us to keep the “video games cause violence” thing out of the media. Case in point: a Swedish Starcraft player recently stabbed a young girl repeatedly after his internet connection died.

Apparently this budding Casanova has a fairly serious mental condition, of the type that will encourage you to inflict harm on a girl walking down the street when you can’t get your zerg fix. He’s now under psychiatric care after the prosecutor failed to get charges up to attempted murder.

I don’t read Swedish, but according to SK Gaming, a major news outlet reported the story as though Starcraft somehow led the boy to pick up the kitchen knife and run outdoors. So please, crazy folks, stop encouraging this kind of shoddy journalism. It’s just too tempting for a newspaper to pass up.

Is Halo really the new Star Wars?

Master Chief Jedi. There’s an odd little article on USA Today this week that suggests Halo is trying to mimic Star Wars in its spin-offs and merchandising. If you want to see some numbers for the franchise it’s a good read, but the article is missing a crucial link: how comic books + action figures + books + sequels + movies = Star Wars.

To be fair, I understand the correlation. Few story worlds have captured public imagination quite like Halo has, but there have been enough of those things lately to realize that Star Wars was no unique phenomenon. Bear with me people. If you take a look at what I’ll call popular story worlds today, they have all been marketed in similar fashion across various media. Harry Potter has spinoff books, figures, video games, children’s toys, and on and on. Lord of the Rings has a similar brand identity. Twilight has completely changed the town in which the story takes place, taking it from a small town to a major tourist location.

What we might be able to say more accurately is that Star Wars is the first of these popular-story-worlds-turned-moneymaking-machines that has survived into the modern age. Comic book heroes took their sweet time getting here, and Lord of the Rings was so long in the making, the movies that is, that many thought it would never happen. But George Lucas did a great job turning Star Wars into more than just a great movie trilogy.

As long as people can find a way to monetize a story, we’ll be hearing this argument. Is it the next Harry Potter? The next Twilight? The next Lord of the Rings? It’s not any of those things, just the next enchanting narrative that got exploited for mass consumption.

Sony nazi ads are fake

Fail.Looking for a surefire way to lose your biggest client? All you have to do is leak ad mock-ups featuring company products reviving dead nazis. That should do the trick. As you’ve no doubt gathered, the PS3 ads that leaked the aren’t day aren’t real. Well, they’re real in the sense that they exist, and they were actually made by an advertising firm for Sony, but Sony never approved them.

That’s good news for Sony, though I can’t imagine the company is particularly pleased, and really bad news for BBDO, the ad firm behind the offending material. Here’s a statement from the executive prez of BBDO Chile:

This creative design did not involve and was never approved by Sony Computer Entertainment or Sony. This “mock campaign” was developed by BBDO Chile staff and was submitted to various creative competitions/festivals without prior notification or approval from SCE/Sony, and it is not representative of the views or advertising policies of SCE/Sony. BBDO Chile apologizes for using this creative concept without authorization or prior approval, and for its misrepresentation of the PlayStation brand and its values.

Yeah, they should have seen that one coming. Submitting ads that racy with no prior approval is just stupid.
