Mass Effect 2 Coming To PC On Time

Mass Effect 2 logo. For a while there, I was a PC gamer only. I had purchased a 360 during my senior year of college and sold it a couple years later because I just wasn’t using it. Between then and about the time I started writing for this blog I had to do something I’m not great at doing when it came to console exclusive games: wait. Games like Mass Effect didn’t release for PC and 360 simultaneously, which was really painful for the major releases.

BioWare has said no more. According to VG247, BioWare’s Jesse Houston let them know that Mass Effect 2 would be shipping for both console and PC at the same time.

This time round, doing it at the same time for a sim-ship, we can control the differences much more smoothly because it’s the same team building it now. Because of this, differences between the two versions of the game should also be minimised, as it’s now the same game appearing on two systems, not a port.

As you all know, games can be delayed, for either one of those systems, for really any reason, and without a whole lot of warning. It’s nice that Houston claims they’ll be launched at the same time, but really, I’m not expecting it.

id Software Closes The Door On ‘Monster Closets’

Where did these guys come from?As an avid gamer, nothing peeves me more than a mechanic that makes me stop thinking about outplaying the game and start thinking about outplaying the game code. There’s a big difference.

The first requires total immersion, like when you’re jumping from box to box on a Halo 3 map trying to lay down some BR love. You’re thinking about the environment, exactly as it exists in most cases, and how to navigate that environment for success.

In the second scenario the game world is more like a transparent film, like an image of the matrix sitting translucent over the scrolling green code, making real the ideas of the developers without totally masking the developer’s tricks. They want to scare you? Make a monster appear out of thin air. When does it appear? When you walk past that one crack on the floor. That was actually the exact scenario with Doom 3 and what players came to call the “monster closets.” You’d be walking along a space corridor, checking empty corners which have no apparent entry or exit, only to get ravaged seconds later by a monster that appeared in the area because of something you triggered by an event like your placement on the map. It was infuriating to play, in large part because it produced such a predictable gaming experience.

Well id says they’re done with that type of development, and they’ll be adding (gasp!) actual AI to the baddies in their up and comer, Rage. As id’s Matt Hooper put it (with some adjustments for clarity):

[In Rage] when you’re going to the RC-Bomb base [from the demo] to deal with the Shrouded clan they’re doing whatever they’re supposed to be doing. If they’re supposed to be defending against you coming there, they’ll be doing that. If they’re just tinkering or having a conversation they’ll do that. You will never see [a monster closet.]

To which I say, “Thank the sweet baby Jesus.”

Sports Illustrated Subscription Gets You A Copy Of Madden 10

Madden 10 for Xbox 360.If you’re a Madden fan looking to get the latest release, you may want to consider signing up for a year of Sports Illustrated instead. The sports mag is actually giving away a copy of Madden 10 with your yearly subscription for free, and for the console of your choice.

From a financial standpoint it’s a great pick. You get 28 issues of the magazine for $49 (and get yourself enrolled for automatic renewal), plus a bonus Madden documentary and, of course, a free copy of Madden 10 (which retails for $60 for PS3 and Xbox 360). I’m willing to call it $125 worth of merchandise for just under $50.

Remember, the deal’s only good if you live in the US or Canada.

“Madden” is still king of the console

Just like clockwork, the annual installment of Electronic Arts’ hugely popular “Madden” football series was released today for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii with a slew of new features. At the top of the list is an online franchise mode that lets you play a ten-season NFL schedule with up to 31 other friends, and, for the first time in the history of the franchise, online co-op. EA has also jumped on the mobile bandwagon with a custom iPhone app that can be used to update rosters on the go.

The game’s biggest strengths this year, however, are the incredible attention to detail, from the addition of a more realistic injury system (play hurt and you could risk a longer recovery) to the lifelike reactions of the players on the field and the coaches and refs on the sideline. As usual, the game isn’t perfect, but much like last year’s 20th anniversary edition, it comes pretty darn close. Check out Bullz-Eye’s full review of the game and, after you’ve had a chance to play it yourself, come back to let us know what you think.

Madden 10 Demos Coming for End of Month

Madden 10 cover.Madden 10 has already gone gold, leaving just one question to my mind: Is the game any good? I think we all knew it was going to sell, regardless of what’s actually inside the box. Luckily, though, EA is giving people a chance to play the game before the August 14th release.

On July 30th, both Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will be able to download the regular demo, which features a night game between the Cowboys and the Giants during a snowstorm. Nothing like snow and specular lighting to show off a game’s new looks, right?

Those of you who went out and preordered from Gamestop will get an extra special treat. For starters, you get your very own demo, available just one week from today – July 23rd. That demo hosts the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Arizona Cardinals in a rematch where you can prove just how bad the cardinals really were. Make those twenty minutes count. We wouldn’t want Kurt Warner to get a big head.

Downloads will be available at midnight.
