Wii Gets A Price Cut, Amazon Offers First Deal

Wii's at Amazon. The latest in the string of console price cuts went live today; you can now officially get a Wii for $199, which is $50 off the previous lowest price. As if that weren’t enough to get you to buy, Amazon hopes to be your retailer of choice. The online seller is offering a $25 gift card with every Wii purchase.

You have just under a week to take advantage of the deal, which is only good through October 3rd. You should also make sure you’re buying the console directly from Amazon as third party vendors don’t count toward the deal. You can expect to receive your gift card 10 days or so after purchase, effectively reducing the cost of your next game by 50%.

Toys R Us Ad Shows $199.99 Wii

Toys R Us Wii ad.>Following months of speculation about price cuts for the other two consoles, it looks like Nintendo will follow suit. This pic from a Toys R Us ad shows the Wii at $199.99, a very attractive price point. Kotaku also reportedly got a look at a Walmart ad showing the same price.

This kind of deal could easily put the Wii back to the top of the sales charts. That puts the bundle, which actually includes Wii Sports, $100 cheaper than the PS3, which jumped to the top of the charts after Sony lowered its price to $299 and released a slim version.

With all of the price cuts coming so far ahead of the holiday season, it makes me wonder what sort of bundles we’ll see later this year. I’d like to think we’ll get some sort of surprise announcement about Natal, but that seems incredibly unlikely.

Toys R Us Unveils Buyback Program

Toys R Us.It looks like Toys R Us is entering the used game business, but not in the way you might expect. Originally it looked as if they would be accepting used games and reselling them, just like your average GameStop, Blockbuster, or Hollywood Video does. As it turns out, though, they’re just buying the game, but they’re even buying the old stuff. As far back as Intellivision old stuff. Yeah, that’s old.

The company is taking the games it purchases back and giving them to a third-party company who refurbs the games for resale. I’m not sure just what that entails, and Toys R Us has yet to be forthcoming with details. As several commenters on Joystiq pointed out, it seems and odd program to establish, particularly because those old games can fetch hundreds of dollars on eBay. For newer games it seems to make some sense. Gamers get store credit for every game they turn in, which in turn means more business for the toy store. But aren’t other companies already doing this? And aren’t they doing it really well?

Best Buy Offers Half Off A 360 Game When You Buy Another

Best Buy.This week Best Buy is showing 360 gamers some love by offering half off one game when you buy another. As always with this sort of deal there is a limited list of titles available, but that list includes big hits like Halo 3 and Fable 2.

Oddly enough, you’ll notice Modern Warfare 2 is on the list, even though the qualifications say you can only choose from titles currently in stock. I highly doubt this promo will be running until November, when the game is set to release, but maybe you can pick up a pre-order on the cheap.

Best Buy has not issued a closing date for the sale, but I wouldn’t take my chances, especially you’re thinking about the new Call of Duty. I know several stores around here have already sold out of their pre-orders, and most are nearly out of the Prestige Edition as well.
