Nintendo 64 kid gets a web redemption

Daniel Tosh.
After seeing Daniel Tosh live I was sure his show would be good. Thinking back to the absolute hilarity that was Patrice Oneal commenting on web videos, I knew I’d like Tosh.0, even if the videos were a bit dated at times.

This week’s episode plays host to one video that, though dated, I’m sure you’ll find interesting. Tosh is giving this week’s web redemption to none other than the Nintendo 64 kid. Yes that Nintendo sixty-foooooooooooour kid. If you are unfamiliar, you should be ashamed. Acquaint yourself here.

The show airs on Thursday evenings. If you haven’t seen an episode yet, use those clever interweb skills to get your hands on one.

Gamestop might just buy a digital distributor

Gamestop store. If you can’t beat ’em, buy ’em. That’s Gamestop’s new take on digital distribution anyway. At an analyst only conference this week, the used game/accessory retailer “detailed” its plans for entering digital distribution. I say “detailed” because the company’s “plan” is, ah, underdeveloped to say the least.

For now Gamestop plans to: 1 – increase in-store sales of online currency cards for online games purchases, 2 – make more games available for digital distro, and 3 – make a “strategic investment” in the market or buy an existing digital distro house. Really smashing ideas guys. Now what’s the actual plan.

Obviously the most concrete idea is number three, but that’s also the hardest to accomplish. Both Valve and IGN (News Corp.) would be reluctant to part with Steam or Direct2Drive. As for other distro houses, nothing else is nearly so well established, and that would mean competing directly with two established and extremely popular alternatives. Back to the drawing board, fellas.

Altec Lansing Stage Gig is as unreal as it gets

Altec Lansing Stage Gig.It looks like Altec Lansing wants a piece of the Rock Band accessory action, even if it means making a product as ridiculous as the Stage Gig. This guitar amp for fake guitars is really just a 40-watt speaker set on an angle so you strike a rocker’s pose in your mom’s basement.

The unit has a single stereo input and output, so you can hook the console straight into the speaker, or chain gang it as a part of your regular setup. If you’re actually willing to spend $100 on this thing, please never contact me for any reason. I’m all for getting into your games, but this takes fake musicianship to an unhealthy level. Like air guitarists but decidedly less cool.

Volkswagen announces new GTI with an iPhone app

Real Racing GTI App.Volkswagen pulled an industry first this week when it decided to launch a new car via an iPhone game. The move wasn’t a leak, but a deliberate attempt to get the 2010 GTI into the hands of its consumers in a way VW thinks those consumers can relate to.

“The GTI customer is a tech-savvy consumer who enjoys social networking, playing games and spending time on mobile devices — most often an iPhone. Launching the all-new 2010 GTI via the Real Racing GTI App allows us to connect with this savvy GTI consumer within his or her everyday life in a way that no 30-second spot ever could,” said Tim Ellis, VP of Marketing for Volkswagen of America. The Real Racing GTI App is available for free download, and offers players a chance to win one of six new GTIs to be given away over the course of the next six weeks.

September was a great month for MMOs

Aion angel flying. The NPD numbers are in for September showing strong sales among MMOs in the PC market. NCSoft’s Aion topped the list, bumping last month’s Sims 3 down a slot. Third and fourth went to Champions Online and Wrath of the Lich King respectively, and the Collector’s Edition of Aion. took fifth.

Aside from the MMO scene, the list was dominated by older titles and smaller games. September wasn’t set to be a huge month for blockbuster titles, regardless of the fact that most of the major Q4 releases have been pushed to 2010. Any time Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships is in the top 20, you know it’s been a slow month. Here’s the full list:

    1. Aion
    2. The Sims 3
    3. Champions Online
    4. World Of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack
    5. Aion Collector’s Ed
    6. Mumbo Jumbo Assortment
    7. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
