Interplay releases Fallout MMO concept art

Fallout box art.As it continues the legal battle with Bethesda over rights to produce a Fallout-based MMO, Interplay has decided to appeal to fans of the series for support. Apparently the legal battle required that some of Interplay’s concept art be made public, so the company posted the material to its forums for a little feedback (and a bit of Bethesda bashing).

As Interplay’s Chris Taylor said, “Some of the concept art for the game has been released due to the lawsuit. This forum will be a place where we can post high quality versions of the same art and you can give us some feedback on it at the same time.”

It’s a strange appeal to make, especially since that feedback won’t really matter if Interplay loses. To be honest, I don’t know who I’d rather have take the project. Bethesda did some great work with Fallout 3 but I’m willing to trust Interplay with the material. Regardless, it’s going to be quite a while before we see a final product, so the concept art will have to hold you over for now. You have to be a forum member at Interplay to view the images, but Kotaku’s got its own gallery up as well.

Capcom thinks Lost Planet 2 will be its big hit

Lost Planet 2 jungle.I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Lost Planet. I’m put off pretty quickly by a weak storyline, and the gameplay was a little too repetitive for my tastes. Honestly, I was a little surprised to hear that Capcom was making a sequel, but according to VG Chartz, the original has sold nearly 2.3 million copies (PS3 and Xbox 360 figures combined.

What I’ve seen of Lost Planet 2 looks a lot like the original. It’s an extreme environment, though this time we get lush jungles, with all manner of things to shoot and blow up. Not a terrible premise for a game, but very, very familiar. According to its latest earnings report, Capcom thinks familiar will sell extremely well. More than 50% sales increase well. The report predicts 3.7 million units moved in the second half of 2010.

I think they’re nuts. Sure, sequels tend to outperform the originals, but that’s a huge increase. Lost Planet just doesn’t have that kind of blockbuster flare.

Playstation Home not a priority

Playstation Home users.Playstation Home doesn’t get a lot of airtime in the states, but it is a little more active in Europe. At the London Games Conference this week, Sony’s director of Playstation Home for Europe, Pete Edwards, said the virtual space has a viable business model but that it’s not a priority for the time being.

“It’s been a long road,” Edwards said. “We’ve proved there is a market out there and we’ve got a lot of people that spend a lot of time in [Home]. It’s not a priority right now but there is a business model there.”

Edwards said earlier this year that European users average 56 minutes in Home per session. That sounds like enough time to consider investing more heavily in the service, but it says nothing of number of users or just what those users are doing. Idle time is a lot different from time spent exploring and interacting with the locations.

Home isn’t going the way of Nokia’s N-Gage, but it’s pretty clear the service won’t be getting much more interesting any time soon.

Weekend deals: COD4 and the Target Wii sale

Target store logo.As the holidays inch ever closer it’s nice to be up on all the latest deals. Some of them are even good enough to get a little something for yourself.

For starters, Target is offering the buy-2-get-1 deal that’s been so popular lately on Wii games. Unfortunately it only applies to games (no accessories this time around) but it is for every game. Get yourself some Wii Sports Resort and throw the other two at your brother/son/roommate. No sense sending them out of the house, right? Sale starts tomorrow.

Steam’s offering a chance to play through COD4 before the release of Modern Warfare 2 drops. The old-school version is a whopping 40% off retail, down to $23.99, up until Monday. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t played the game, but if you lost your discs or something, at least Steam is here for you.

N-Gage goes the way of the dodo

Nokia's N-Gage going the way of the Dodo.Nokia will be closing the doors to its wildly unpopular N-Gage gaming service next year, according to an official blog post today. The service never really got off the ground, which isn’t much of a surprise. Remember those phones? They were absurd. After that it became an online platform with a following most industry folks would call “cute.”

Of course Nokia is masking the failure behind the launch of the Ovi Store, but I think we all know what really happened: the App Store. The iPhone tapped into Nokia’s arteries a while back and just isn’t stopping. The platform is much more attractive to developers and is probably making them a lot more money as well.

For the one to two this affects, you will still be able to get your N-Gage games until September 2010. The community site will shut down at the end of the year.
