Swain art spotlight will make you appreciate those splash screens

I didn’t spend too much time thinking about the splash screen art in the game, until now. Riot released a time-lapse video that shows the creation of the Swain splash, definitely one of the cooler splash screens in the game, and it’s pretty awesome.

The video takes more than nine hours of work and compresses it down to just six minutes. It’s a great way to see the kind of care that goes into this kind of thing, and it’s a good resource for anyone looking to get into video game art creation.

Skin sales have been good to me, lately

Tribal Ryze.

I’ve been waiting a while for the skin sales to finally have something I don’t already own or have no interest in owning, and it looks like it finally happened. Over the past week I was able to pick up Pharaoh Amumu and Tribal Ryze for a total less than 500 RP. It was a pretty sweet deal, and I hope it keeps coming.

I’d venture a guess that I own at least one skin for nearly all of the champions. There are a few exceptions, of course – Janna and Kassadin off the top of my head – but I like the extra bit of flair the skins add to the game. I’m also happy to throw my money at a game that I’ve enjoyed so immensely over the last 10 months or so. That said, I’ve tried not to buy any full price skins in the last three months or so. I had seen so many skins go on sale that I had already purchased that I just had to start waiting. Glad to see it has finally paid off.

Champion sneak peek: Lux

Lux.Since I’ve been away from the game for nearly a week and a half, it’s hard to believe there’s yet another champion already on the horizon. Lux joins the League as Garen’s sister, and looks as though she fights with cattle prods. All of her skills are skillshots, though, so she seems more closely related to Ezreal than Garen.

Here’s what I could gather about her skills from around the web:

Illumination (passive): Lux’s damaging spells illuminate the target for 6 seconds. Lux’s next attack ignites the debuff, dealing 20-180 (depending on Lux’s level) magic damage to the target.

Light Binding (Q): Fires a ball of light towards a target location, binding the units hit for 2 seconds. The units take 80 magic damage. Can hit up to 2 targets with the 2nd target receiving 50 percent effect.

Lucent Singularity (W): Creates a zone that slows enemy units by 13 percent (zone lasts 5 seconds). Can be detonated to damage enemies in the area for 60 magic damage.

Prismatic Wave (E): Passive: Lux’s cooldowns are reduced by 3 percent. Active: Fires a wave to the target location and back, instantly stealthing any allied champions for 3 seconds. Lux is also struck by the wave upon return.

Final Sparkling (R): After a short delay, Lux fires a laser pulse in front of her dealing 250 damage to all enemy units in the area.

Let me just say, this is the most creative champion release in a long time. Invisibility for a whole team? Granted, it’s only three seconds, and it’s a skillshot buff, but it’s one of the most innovative things we’ve seen. The slow orb is also pretty interesting – think of it like a Gragas barrel with an AoE slow effect. On the whole, she sounds much better off than Swain, mostly because she can use all of her abilities from a safe distance.

Official Blizzcon schedule is up

Blizzcon 2010 schedule of events

Blizzcon’s coming at the end of the month and should bring all sorts of goodies for World of Warcraft and Diablo III fans. The official schedule of events went up last week, and it’s worth taking a look at.

From what I can tell, there isn’t much about the next Starcraft II expansion. Players have been aching for a new campaign to follow the Wings of Liberty release, and though there’s still a chance we might get something, it’s not looking likely.

Then there’s Diablo III. I’m really having trouble deciding whether or not I’m excited about the game. As much fun as I had with the first two titles in the franchise, I’m still having trouble imagining how the playstyle could translate to a fun game in 2011. The classes sound interesting so far, but at its core, the Diablo series turned into little more than a grindfest, to the point it was easily programmable for bots. I’m hoping the gameplay videos give me enough reason to believe the game can be good.

Of course, there’s also WoW news, which will be all Cataclysm, all conference long. We’ll finally get the new content on December 7th, which means Blizzcon will be showing off all the stuff players will soon be having.
