100 Friend Limit Got You Down? Stop Playing Halo 2!

Master Chief is killing your friends list. For too long Microsoft has been the gatekeeper to so much potential fun. I can only have up to 120GB of hard drive space. I can only have an Xbox that lasts for two years before breaking. I can only have 100 friends.

The last, at least, seems to be a bit of a problem with the Xbox Live user base. The real reason you can’t have 100 friends is because too many people still play Halo 2 online. That’s straight from Microsoft, in fact. You see, with so many active subscriptions primarily to play Halo 2, Microsoft would be alienating a huge user base if they decided to suddenly cut support. Unfortunately, there’s also no way for the company to upgrade the current Xbox Live architecture to provide >100 friend support without cutting the cord on that Halo 2 consumer base.

The Microsoft source with the story did say that Halo 3: ODST could be the torpedo that sinks Halo 2 since it would give players two different Halo titles to choose from.

What do you think? Are you still playing Halo 2? Would you understand if Microsoft cut the cord to allow more than 100 friends on Live?

Facebook, Twitter To Hit Xbox Live This Fall

Facebook running on Xbox Live. For those of you thinking you might see Facebook or Twitter with the new dashboard update, you’ll have to wait. Not for long, though. Microsoft marketing man James Halton said today that Microsoft is set to release the social networks this fall on their Xbox Live service.

Halton would only get so specific as to say “”It will be before Christmas. A lot of the background work’s been done for a lot of applications that are coming.” So maybe that’s what comes with the August 11th update – background support for more up and coming applications. If you recall, that update also includes games on demand and Netflix movie parties.

Facebook/Twitter integration brings the 360 closer to the goal Microsoft so touted at the console’s release: to be the entertainment hub of the house. Now what’s there to get you off your couch? Oh, right. That would be Project Natal.

Microsoft Opens Opt-In Style Live Preview Beta

Xbox Live downloadable games. There’s a lot of pride and one-upping that comes along with beta testing in the video game world. It’s not exactly the same for OS upgrades, but for the super nerds out there, OS betas sport the same clout.

Microsoft has just unveiled their version of an OS beta via Xbox Live update previews. To sign up, just sign in to Live using your Gamertag, fill out the Xbox Live Update Preview Sign Up survey and you’re good to go. From there, Microsoft will select “multiple thousands” to participate in the preview for load testing.

What’s in the update? You’ll get access to the new Games on Demand section, Netflix Movie Parties, and Avatar Awardables. Not a bad lineup for the new update. The program will be open to both Gold and Silver members, with preference given to the Golds. Microsoft said they’ll be contacting people who have been awarded a spot in about a week. Stop back and let us know in the comments if you’re one of the lucky few (relatively speaking, of course).
