Sports Authority to start selling Wii and Wii Fit

The Sports Authority.Looks like Sports Authority doesn’t want to miss out on the Wii Fit craze. The sporting goods retailer plans to start selling the exercise game along with Wii consoles at select stores. Kinda funny that the announcement comes shortly after the American Council on Exercise called results from Nintendo’s popular fitness series “underwhelming,” no?

“Sports Authority recognized that the Wii console is a product that can help you stay active and have fun with your family at the same time, which is why the retail partnership with Nintendo is a perfect fit,” said Sports Authority president David Campisi. Yeah yeah, Campisi, we don’t need you to sell us on the Wii. No matter what store the thing is in it’s going to move, so it was pretty smart for you to pick the thing up. Hell, Dell was selling them for a while.

Wii's at Amazon. The latest in the string of console price cuts went live today; you can now officially get a Wii for $199, which is $50 off the previous lowest price. As if that weren’t enough to get you to buy, Amazon hopes to be your retailer of choice. The online seller is offering a $25 gift card with every Wii purchase.

You have just under a week to take advantage of the deal, which is only good through October 3rd. Wii Fit Plus.Nintendo prez Reggie Fils-Aime stopped by the GameStop Manager Conference to announce details for Wii Fit Plus, the latest in Nintendo’s exercise game series. The new title is really an expansion of the first, hopefully adding more hula-hooping goodness to the existing game.

For thsoe of you who already own Wii Fit, the Plus version will run you a cool $19.99, and it’s available October 4th. If you don’t already own the game but want to see Nintendo continue to make money off this crazy game, Wii Fit Plus will be replacing the original version of the game at $99.99. Wii MotionPlus is Selling Well Despite Industry Sales

The Wii MotionPlus.NPD’s June report looked a little dire for most of the video game world. Hardware sales are down, software sales are down, Sony doesn’t seem to improving, etc, etc. Nintendo, however, is proving itself to be the little engine that could with this generation. Despite lagging sales numbers, the Wii MotionPlus is selling incredibly well, and Wii Sports Resort isn’t even out yet.

Let’s have a look at the numbers, shall we? You may remember the Wii only sold 361,700 units in June. Not huge numbers, and I certainly wouldn’t expect Wii MotionPlus sales to come anywhere close, especially without Wii Sports Resort. Now granted, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 was shipping with the new and improved dongle, but that’s really the only game taking serious advantage of the accessory.

The MotionPlus sold almost 170,000 units in its first month, though, and that’s not counting the ones that shipped with the new Tiger game, which itself sold 272,400 units. All in all you’re talking about nearly a half a million units, and do I need to say again, Sports Resort isn’t out yet! By all accounts the game is awesome – a big improvement on the already excellent Wii Sports game. When it finally releases, you can bet you’ll see even bigger MotionPlus numbers.
