Leona patch included Spectator prep

I haven’t been on the forums much over the weekend, mostly because of the sheer volume of rage threads since the Leona patch, so maybe someone already covered this. I played a ranked game earlier today and couldn’t help but notice that the pick/ban screen had undergone a small change. Bans are now listed under the respective team that chose the banned character. The portraits are also small enough to allow for more than four bans.

I can only think of one reason to make that kind of change – Spectator Mode. The old system was fine. It was easy enough to understand and it certainly wasn’t the sort of function I would expect Riot to bother changing unless it was tied to another feature. The only feature that could possibly tie to would be Spectator Mode.

I hate to make predictions about this, because Riot’s timing is known only to Riot, but it seems like Spectator Mode could be right around the corner. I can’t say I’m dying to get my hands on it – I think the cases are rare that I would want to spectate a game, but it will be great for the competitive scene. It also seems totally reasonable that replays could have been the technical problem that delayed Leona’s release.

PvP.net launcher updated

If you logged in to League of Legends yesterday, you were probably greeted by an update to the patcher. My own migration took more time than expected, but in the end I’m hoping the technical support for this new launcher will help reduce Riot’s customer support load.

The new launcher is designed to be able to handle older versions of the League of Legends engine so that game updates don’t break old replays. It’s also intended to smooth out the patching experience, so hopefully fewer reinstalls are required.

As Slamtastic mentioned on another post, this does have an effect on the way custom skins are handled. It is still possible to install them, it just takes a little more effort. You can find a thread with instructions on the League of Legends forums.

Thankfully, Riot seems to have worked out the FPS/latency issues that some players associated with the new launcher. I know the last time I went from new launcher to old I saw an FPS bump of 10-15 frames. I haven’t noticed any FPS loss since yesterday’s update.

Community programmers release League of Legends replay tool

LoL Replay. It was only a matter of time before intrepid programmers from the LoL community got fed up with the long wait for Riot’s official replay system and decided to do something about it. Matt and Cam, two programmers from Perth, have made a third party League of Legends replay tool, and it only took them three weeks.

Yeah, three weeks. It doesn’t interface directly with the LoL client, and since Riot is currently working on its own replay system, the company has been removing links to the program on the official forums. That said, you can get the program, called “LoL Replay” from the developer’s website.

Up to this point, the best way to see a “replay” of your game was to video record your desktop, which can be a resource intensive process. The LoL Replay tool works by recording network traffic and using the data to recreate the game afterward. This allows the player to view different perspectives from the match, though I don’t know if it’s possible to watch enemy movements.

I’m away from my desktop right now, but I’ll be giving this a test later today. The news is especially relevant now that Riot has released a launcher/patcher capable of supporting replays, even if it is only in beta.

What does the extended server downtime mean?

Server Unavailable

For the past two weeks we’ve seen extended server downtime on patch day, a trend that bucks several months of mostly problem-free patching. As good as the last several months have been, I immediately think of the long downtime associated with patches before Season One, back when servers would go down for the entire day, sometimes more.

I’m hoping the recent extended downtimes mean Riot is preparing the servers, software or hardware, for new feature releases. These last two patches have been remarkably light on content. There have not been major champion changes and Riot has yet to introduce any major client updates. Barring those things, there isn’t much that should delay the update process as much as we’ve seen.

Could we see a client update before March 1st?
