Reading Material: ‘Extra Lives’ by Tom Bissell

Extra LivesWhile I was in college I had thought to write my thesis about narrative in video games against a backdrop of narrative convention, but I focused on a creative project instead. Knowing what I do now, I sometimes wish I could go back and work on the narrative project instead, but I realize I probably didn’t have the focus to do that sort of paper justice and, more to the point, games were still too much of a playtime hobby for me.

Over the course of the past year I’ve gotten more and more interested in the serious criticism surrounding games and gaming. There isn’t much, and a lot of what’s out there is dated – some of it is decades old, which for this industry might as well be a millienium – and nearly all the rest is written by people who haven’t seriously played video games.

I did tell Santa about one book, though: ‘Extra Lives’ by Tom Bissell. Bissell is a journalist and author with a pretty impressive resume who also happens to be a serious gamer. As he mentions in the opening chapter of the book, he spent more than 200 hours playing Oblivion, and not for study. Bissell loves games and gaming, but he also has the tools necessary to write about them in meaningful ways.

I’m at the halfway point of ‘Extra Lives’ and though I’m not exactly sure where he’s taking things, I’ve enjoyed it immensely. It’s refreshing to read someone who can intelligently talk about video games without condemning the players and the developers and the entire industry to some special hell reserved for people with too much free time on their hands.

If you’re looking for a new read, consider it. I’d love to hear what you guys think about the book.

Reading Material: Josh Olson On Script Reading

Life's tough when you're a spartan. This isn’t exactly news, but it drubbed up an old dream that I might see a Halo movie before 2010. I found this article through a post on TechCrunch by the illustrious Michael Arrington. The article is written by Josh Olson, who you may remember as a potential writer for the Halo script. He was also nominated for a whole slew of awards for his 2006 screenplay, A History of Violence.

The article is a good read, but it makes it all the more depressing to think that a guy like Olson was actually going to pen the script for the Halo movie. I think any movie set in the Halo universe has incredible potential. It’s soul-crushing to see all of the talent involved in the project, and then think it might not get off the ground.

Speaking of involved talent, you should see District 9 if you haven’t. Great flick, and it was written by Neil Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. Sigh.

Reading Material: Joystiq Interview With Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg

Xbox's Aaron Greenberg.I’m starting this column as a way to transfer the interesting and entertaining articles I get to read most of the day to you guys. These are mostly articles that I can’t appropriately rehash here without some pretty serious plagiarism and a lot of extra time I simply don’t have.

This week’s entry comes courtesy of Joystiq and Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg. Greenberg sat down with Joystiq this week to discuss the rollout of Microsoft’s new Xbox 360 price structure. The interview is long, so don’t get in there unless you’ve got some time free to do a good bit of reading.

Greenberg was gracious enough to cover everything from basic competitive strategies for dealing with Sony to holiday release titles to services destined for Xbox Live glory. Of interest to most of you will probalby be Greenberg’s take on Hulu or Amazon Unbox coming to the 360. He says seeking those sorts of services is akin to, “asking out a really hot chick on a date, they don’t all say yes.” Sorry gamers, Hulu is just out of your league. Why don’t you stick to what you know, like paying for your television content the Microsoft way.

The rest of the interview is a good way to catch up if you’ve been on a desert island for some time now. It’s like a survey course in recent Xboxian history. Hit the link below for the full article.
