Season 1 Rewards and the Importance of Achievemnts

As the end of Season One approaches, players have been scrambling to rank up for rewards. I’ve been in the mix myself, finally pushing through and securing gold late last night. It was challenging, but that also made it fun, and as a result I’m going to get some rewards. The funny thing, for me anyway, is that I don’t care much about the rewards. I’m not a Jarvan player. I don’t post on the forums much, if at all, but the simple fact that there is a reward associated with a tangible goal made the journey toward that goal a lot more compelling.

There was also an interesting side effect, which is where the whole “importance of achievements” thing comes in. As my rating edged closer to the 1520 mark for gold status, players were more helpful and level-headed. Granted, this is some circumstantial evidence, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that the attitude adjustment is due to the fact that players have a common goal beyond just winning.

It’s rare that I play with people who don’t want to win, but there’s really very little incentive to winning beyond, well, just winning. The ELO grind really didn’t mean anything. Players at every ELO rank complain that the players in that bracket are noobs and trolls. There’s also the fact that ELO is an endless grind. I can hit 1800 but what then? More games? Maybe make it to 1900? Maybe fall back down to 1600? There is no tangible reward other than bragging rights to make the ELO grind interesting.

This Season One reward is nothing more than an achievement system, and for me it worked pretty well. I know there are still a lot of players struggling with ELO hell, but let me reiterate this – getting out of ELO hell won’t make your games that much better. There will still be trolls. There will still be feeders. There will still be games you just can’t carry. I don’t think you’ll see a real shift in player attitude until Riot gives us something more than just a win and a ranking to worry about.

LoL: The painful losing streak is back

League of Legends.

A couple months back I went on a massive losing streak. I dropped something like 23 games over the course of just a couple days. It was awful, and now it’s back.

I should say that there is a bright spot. Over the past two weeks or so I’ve been blowing through some wins, all the way from my typical 65 games or so above .500 to nearly 80. It was a great run. But today for some reason, I just can’t win. It’s not like I’m cutting it close either. We’re talking losses that are decided in the first five minutes of the game (I know some of you guys don’t believe that can happen, but when multiple turrets are down and you’re looking at a ten kill deficit, it’s over). In most cases I have teammates that are feeding rampantly, or choosing completely ridiculous comps. I’ve tried to dodge the worst of them, only to be paired with either the same players or see very similar comps.

I start to wonder if Riot doesn’t update the ELO system on a weekly basis instead of dynamically, so my ELO shifts to create these streaks. I know I’m not top ELO, but I’m close. In fact, on my higher win streaks I was getting paired with top ELO players regularly. I think because I’m a higher ELO, though, I tend to be the guy meant to “balance” my team. The other team will all be mid-high players, while my team tends to look like mostly mid players with me and maybe one mid-high ELO player. It’s a pretty raw deal, and usually ends with a loss for me. In one particularly bad TT game today I asked if my team was new to the map. My Jax had played TT precisely once.

LoL: Should TT have a separate ELO system?

Twisted Treeline.I’ve spent all of my game time over the past two days getting to know Twisted Treeline. It’s a very different playstyle, different enough that I don’t feel like I’m even close to mastering it. I’ve been playing with the same friends I played with on Summoner’s Rift, and while some of them have been successful, others have struggled to learn the map and the new game.

A red post on the forums answered the question most people have been asking: will Treeline have a separate ELO? The answer is no. The two maps will share the same ranking system. For now, I can’t say this makes sense. I’m not saying we should start back at ground zero – the first few months would be a total mess. Instead, why not take the current 5v5 ELO and apply it to Treeline and let it update independently of the 5v5 system.

From what I’ve seen, some people will pick up Treeline very quickly. Others are going to take a very long time. I’ve seen so many ridiculous comps it makes me wonder how we’re at the same ELO. Granted, I solo queue a ton, but I’m more than 60 games above .500. The best explanation I see is that the game is completely different in a 3v3 setting. People who quickly migrate between those systems shouldn’t be matched against players that think Fiddle/Gang/Anivia is a strong comp.
