PvP.net launcher updated

If you logged in to League of Legends yesterday, you were probably greeted by an update to the patcher. My own migration took more time than expected, but in the end I’m hoping the technical support for this new launcher will help reduce Riot’s customer support load.

The new launcher is designed to be able to handle older versions of the League of Legends engine so that game updates don’t break old replays. It’s also intended to smooth out the patching experience, so hopefully fewer reinstalls are required.

As Slamtastic mentioned on another post, this does have an effect on the way custom skins are handled. It is still possible to install them, it just takes a little more effort. You can find a thread with instructions on the League of Legends forums.

Thankfully, Riot seems to have worked out the FPS/latency issues that some players associated with the new launcher. I know the last time I went from new launcher to old I saw an FPS bump of 10-15 frames. I haven’t noticed any FPS loss since yesterday’s update.

The client bugs have got to go

Chat FailI’ve had a frustrating run of games recently – losses, droppers, feeders, the usual – but they’ve been made even more frustrating by the seemingly rampant client bugs.

First, check out that chat list. Looks normal, right? Except I have six friends on line but they are nowhere in my chat list. See how the arrows all point down? That means the lists are expanded, there’s just nothing in them. All last night this was happening, and I had talked to a few people (sorry, Sannu) about getting a game in. Occasionally my notification box would light up red, but when I would click it, it would just say “No recent notifications.” Neat.

Then there’s the lobby chat bug, wherein I don’t get to talk to my teammates about comp, to offer my services as a tank/jungler/carry/whatever, don’t get to beg the Gangplank who insisted he take mid at nearly 1600 ELO to not take it the second game I got stuck with him (and watched him feed, again). Or how about changes to your rune page not saving properly, masteries taking forever to load, champion skins not being selected properly (sorry, I want my Magnificent Twisted Fate, not PAX Fate), or the chat rooms I have set to load on start loading without a name and without me in them.

These things seem small, but they all happen frequently enough that, when piled onto the frustration of playing with feeders, make for a bad experience. I have just as many good experiences in this game, even more, but the bad ones feel so bad it can be hard to remember the good.

Anyone else having client issues?

Riot adds “The Button,” service ticker to PvP.net

loss-forgiven

That’s a game from last night, shortly after Riot’s new service ticker alerted me that the company was aware of some general service issues and working on a fix. Loss forgiveness comes as a result of what’s known as “The Button.” The Button is a switch Riot can throw whenever there’s trouble that sets the game into a special mode to prevent players from accruing losses and losing ELO as a result of technical difficulties. In the game you see above, everything was fine until about the five minute mark. From that point forward there was a solid five second delay between a given command and the corresponding action. I’m glad to see I didn’t lose any ELO as a result. The Button does allow winning teams to still get the win and get ELO recorded, but at 50 percent the normal rate.

While I understand the idea behind the service ticker – more communication with the player base – I do hope Riot uses it sparingly. It could easily create a placebo effect, which might result in more backlash than if Riot just hadn’t said anything. I know when I see that yellow box all lit up, I’ll be looking for problems, and that’s not the way the game was meant to be enjoyed. If used sparingly, though, I think it could do just fine.
