Multiple mastery pages arrive with today’s patch

Late last night, Guinsoo tweeted that a “sneaky new feature” might make the patch. I thought it might be something small and simple but instead we got a long-awaited feature. Today’s patch included multiple mastery pages.

The system is simple enough – you save your masteries by creating a custom title for your page and then adding as many pages as you like, up to 10. In case anyone is wondering, the feature is free. Nope, doesn’t even cost IP.

Ten pages is a crazy amount of diversity for the current mastery system. I’m hoping that means we’ll get to see some improvements to what’s currently there. I actually think I’m only using eight, and that includes some redundancy for minor changes, like four percent attack speed instead of six armor penetration.

It’s kind of hilarious, but not knowing that this was on the way made me really happy when it was actually implemented. I really hope Riot keeps that up in the future. Granted, we’re waiting on a lot of improvements, to both the game and the PvP.net client, but little surprises here and there are much more enjoyable than the long wait for “incoming” features.

What does the extended server downtime mean?

Server Unavailable

For the past two weeks we’ve seen extended server downtime on patch day, a trend that bucks several months of mostly problem-free patching. As good as the last several months have been, I immediately think of the long downtime associated with patches before Season One, back when servers would go down for the entire day, sometimes more.

I’m hoping the recent extended downtimes mean Riot is preparing the servers, software or hardware, for new feature releases. These last two patches have been remarkably light on content. There have not been major champion changes and Riot has yet to introduce any major client updates. Barring those things, there isn’t much that should delay the update process as much as we’ve seen.

Could we see a client update before March 1st?

Riot adds “The Button,” service ticker to PvP.net

loss-forgiven

That’s a game from last night, shortly after Riot’s new service ticker alerted me that the company was aware of some general service issues and working on a fix. Loss forgiveness comes as a result of what’s known as “The Button.” The Button is a switch Riot can throw whenever there’s trouble that sets the game into a special mode to prevent players from accruing losses and losing ELO as a result of technical difficulties. In the game you see above, everything was fine until about the five minute mark. From that point forward there was a solid five second delay between a given command and the corresponding action. I’m glad to see I didn’t lose any ELO as a result. The Button does allow winning teams to still get the win and get ELO recorded, but at 50 percent the normal rate.

While I understand the idea behind the service ticker – more communication with the player base – I do hope Riot uses it sparingly. It could easily create a placebo effect, which might result in more backlash than if Riot just hadn’t said anything. I know when I see that yellow box all lit up, I’ll be looking for problems, and that’s not the way the game was meant to be enjoyed. If used sparingly, though, I think it could do just fine.
