The Halo Waypoint Twitter account posted some fantastic information earlier today. The service designed to completely inundate you with anything and everything related to Halo launches on November 5th.
Nov 5. Mark it on your calendar. That’s when you will get your hands (or controllers) on Halo Waypoint. 🙂
Just think of the massive influx of pimple-faced boys, those same 13 year-olds who corpse hump you and call you all sorts of non-PC names, that will be gracing the Xbox Live servers on the 5th, hoping for gratuitous Cortana nudity. It could be a great day, but it’s probably going to be a sad day.
It’s not often that you see a board game release a trailer, but that’s apparently part of USAopoly’s marketing plan for Risk: Halo Wars. It is often, however, that you’ll find me slavering to play a new Risk game. I’m a huge fan of the original, and while the Lord of the Rings version didn’t thrill me, the Star Wars version is fantastic. From the looks of things, the Halo Wars pack should live up to my expectations, if only because I’d be able to play the Flood.
Set to release later this fall, the Halo Wars version of Risk puts you in control of the Covenant, the Flood, or the UNSC, each fighting for their own survival against the others. The game has 3 play modes, from adventure/story-driven to a reworked classic play. I’ll spare you the details as I’m sure nearly everyone’s played Risk at some point.
What I’m most interested to see is the quick gameplay. The great thing about the Star Wars Risk Clone Wars Edition was that it implemented some time constraints. Don’t get me wrong, I love the 3-day Risk marathons, but it can be hard to get into a game that will soak up so much time. Newer versions of Risk have created mechanics that keep the game short, but still enjoyable enough to keep me coming back.
Watch for Risk: Halo Wars this fall at Amazon, JC Penny, and Hollywood Video of all places.
Microsoft’s initial announcement of Halo Waypoint was short on details and long on promises about integrating with your “Halo lifestyle.” I don’t even know what a “Halo lifestyle” means, but I can think of a few years of my life in which I tried to find out. Former Bungie man Frank O’Connor stopped by Comic-Con to release a few details on the upcoming Waypoint.
According to Frankie, Halo Waypoint is about more than just games and videos. It’s a place for fans to get together and enjoy content. “We’re going to aggregate everything that you would want to watch from the halo universe on that site,” he said. “But it’s a lot more ambitious than that. It’s going to evolve in features and functionality to make it the prime destination for the Halo fan.”
Well thanks, Frank. That really clears things up. He goes on to say that you’ll be able to view things like old E3 trailers and potentially access new multiplayer features. To be Frank frank, Frank wasn’t very forthcoming. In fact, no one’s clear whether Silver members will have access to Waypoint in its entirety or if there will be features exclusive to Gold members.
The one thing O’Connor did actually give details for was the premier of the Halo Legends anime episodes. The episodes will be available on a “staggered schedule” over Waypoint. It won’t be quite like a television broadcast, but there will be time constraints between the initial viewing and a Blu-Ray/digital distro release.
Everyone’s favorite Major updated early this morning to let everyone know that the Halo Wars Historical Battle Map Pack is now live and ready for download. The DLC will run you 800 MS Points (can’t wait for them to do away with these things). The maps come with some familiar names – Blood River, Glacial Ravine, Barrens, and Memorial Basin. So that last one is a newish name.
Here’s the blurb from Nelson’s blog:
Expand your Halo Wars experience with the Historical Battle Map Pack Add-on. These four new maps highlight key turning points in the epic war between the UNSC and Covenant forces. The maps include: Blood River – battle a single opponent over a treacherous natural chokepoint; Barrens – engage your enemy in the midst of the Flood; Memorial Basin – two vs. two team play in one of the bloodiest battles in Halo history; and Glacial Ravine — three vs. three action as you fight to control a narrow corridor flanked by energy walls.
Got $5 sitting around? If so, you can go get yours right now.
