LoL: Per win IP boosts are now available

PvP.net store.Riot finally added an option a lot of people have been waiting for: per-win IP boosts. Previously, you could only purchase IP boosts in timed increments – a day, three days, or a week. This option gives you a little more consistency in the return on the investment.

The new boosts will be available for 4-win or 10-win denominations. A win will not be consumed in the following situations:
a. Games where the player loses
b. Games where the player leaves/disconnects (and doesn’t rejoin)
c. Practice games with uneven teams on game start
d. Games that don’t last longer than 10 minutes
e. Practice games for players higher than level 11, that have played more than 4 practice games in that 24 hour period

Basically when you win and you are rewarded IP for the win, that IP will be doubled so long as you have wins remaining. I was around when they gave out the three-day IP boost alongside UFO Corki (for players that already had him unlocked) and let me tell you, there is no better way to ramp up your IP quickly. Now that you have the option to control just how much IP you’ll get, the boosts seem even more useful if you need to buy a few runes or quick champion.

LoL: Olaf is on release notice

Olaf, the berserker.

Well, that was fast. The “champion approaches” post is already up for the viking champion, Olaf, along with a few in-game screens and his splash page (which is huge resolution, by the by).

Abilities:
Undertow: Olaf throws an axe into the ground at a target location, dealing damage and slowing the movement speed of units it passes through. If Olaf picks up the axe, the ability’s cooldown is reduced by several seconds.

Vicious Strikes: Olaf’s attack damage is increased, scaling based on his health, and he gains massive lifesteal and spell vamp.

Reckless Swing: Olaf attacks with such force that it deals true damage to his target and himself.

Ragnarok (ultimate): Olaf becomes immune to disables, gains increased armor penetration, and reduces incoming damage by a flat amount.

Berserker Rage (passive): For each percentage of health Olaf is missing, Olaf’s attack speed is increased by that percentage.

There you have it – from what I can tell he sounds a bit like Yi, though his ultimate is about a thousand percent better (as is his passive). I’m guessing we’re due for another patch early next week if this post is already up. That’s mighty quick turnaround for a new champion, especially considering how buggy Malzahar is currently (anyone else noticed the crazy ult bugs?).

Still, I’m pumped to see the champion list continue to grow.

LoL: Player hits 1000 referrals

Referral instructions.I’m actually dumbfounded by this bit of news. It’s hard to believe it’s possible, but a player has managed to reach 1000 referrals, netting him a permanent place as a part of the actual game. The player, who plays under the name Grez, will have the lizard on TT named after him.

Just so you understand how difficult a feat this truly is, consider that Grez had to get 1000 friends to not only sign up, but to play until level 10. I have a smurf account that recently hit level 10, and let me say, it took some time. It’s not that I don’t think the game is good enough to get friends – it is – but in my experience, it takes someone really enjoying a game to get as far as level 10 can take.

Grez must have been bombing the whole of the internet with his referral link. Whatever the case, congrats to Grez on his success. You can find a full list of possible referral rewards at the referral instructions home page.

LoL: Sneak Peek – Olaf the Berserker

Olaf, the Berserker.

Ho ho ho, Riot! What have we here? You know, I was starting to get a little concerned about the art department at Riot. The most recent new champions have had their own distinct flavor, but nothing screamed badass like this axe-wielding norse maniac.

Since it’s just a sneak peek, the initial details are very slim, but I would highly encourage interested parties to avail themselves of tools that may be disappearing over the next month or so. Though I am a little concerned to see yet another melee toon, Olaf does have that special look – a certain flair for disaster – that makes me want to use him for some good old fashioned face stomping.

You can see what Riot has to say about our viking friend in the announcements forum.

LoL: The new reporting system

Report players dialogue. This latest patch added community functionality I’ve been waiting on for a long time. Finally, the PvP.net client offers a way to report players for various infractions. It’s still unclear what the reports will do, but for now, it’s nice to have a method in-game (well, in-client really) for reporting abusive players.

The function can be reached by right-clicking a player’s name at the post-game screen. From there you can report for verbal harassment, intentional game disruption, excessive idle, or “other.” You can also leave comments on the situation. I’ll be curious to see what Riot actually does with the reports. Not much has been said yet, so I doubt they’re getting the deluge of complaints that will doubtlessly come as more people discover the feature.

In any case, I’m glad for the option, but I’ll wait to pass judgement until we see how it will impact the game.
