Leona gets a sneaky launch this afternoon

Looks like it’s time for me to eat a little crow. I didn’t think there was any way Riot would launch Leona until tomorrow, but they went ahead and set her live this afternoon. She’s available now in the store for 6300 IP or the usual 975 RP.

So far I’ve only had the chance to play one game with her but it went exceedingly well. She feels strong – lots of CC, responsive attack animations and spell animations, and enough damage from her skills and her passive combined – but not overpowered, at least not at first glance. She makes a devastating lane partner for anyone with a stun and I’ll be interested to see how she fares as a solo. If there’s one way she might be a little strong it’s that her shield can be up nearly all the time and it gives an amazing amount of resist (30 MR/armor at rank 1). Most importantly, though, she seems like a lot of fun to play. In the past I’ve said that when I should have been saying “this champ is OP,” but I’m hoping that’s not the case here.

I’ll give more impressions about her either later tonight or early tomorrow. What have you guys found so far?

No Leona until at least Thursday

It looks like Leona is going to blow past the mid-week release point, despite Riot’s plan to release her early this week. The European servers are scheduled to get Friday’s balance changes tomorrow morning. The patch will not include Leona, similar to the NA patch, due to stability concerns. Once Riot believes the servers are stable they’ll set Leona live on both realms.

It’s really been a bummer to see Leona delayed for so long. The game hasn’t changed in a significant way in quite some time, so champion releases are really what drive my interest in the game. Leona’s delay has definitely been a bit of a letdown.

I understand that stability has to be the number one concern, I just wish Riot could give us a little more detail. Leona doesn’t seem to have any new tech, so what about her impacts stability? Does she not interact well with other features that are being slowly patched in? Is this patch a preparation for something much bigger from Riot headquarters? Communication is key, especially now that we’re between seasons. I think Riot would do well to build hype for new features and communicate as much about any delays or problems as is possible. With several other MOBAs on the horizon, now is not the time to let the game and the player base go stagnant.

Champ of the Week: Soraka

I’ve never been much of a support player. It just doesn’t appeal to me. I like to farm. I like to take buffs. I like to gank. I like to set up champion kills. I don’t like to stand in lane watching my Clairvoyance cooldown tick away. But there’s no way to deny that support can make or break a game, and playing against a good support can be extremely frustrating. Lucky for anyone matched against me this week, I’m not a good support. I bring you this week’s Champ of the Week: Soraka.

Soraka is probably the most straightforward support champion in the game. She doesn’t have any crazy AoE disables, any shields, any CC other than her silence. She just heals, and heals for quite a bit. I have two problems when playing Soraka that I’m hoping to remedy this week. First, I put too much faith in her early healing. That cooldown is long and without any AP the heal is fairly weak at lower levels. As mentioned above, I really like action, so standing in lane and waiting for my carry to get farmed gets really boring. That’s when I tend to overextend or try to harass too much and get my ass killed.

I also need to work on her build. I know a lot of players like to get an Aegis, but I often feel like it comes too late in the game to be truly useful. It’s a good item, I just hate looking at my spells 25 minutes into the game and seeing the base heal amount on all of them. That said, an AP rush usually isn’t in Soraka’s (or her team’s) best interest. I’m going to focus on playing builds that maximize my team efficiency and maybe one or two that can add a little flavor to her playstyle. I see a Deathfire in my future.

Champ of the Week: Shaco Wrapup

I’m a little surprised and bit more embarrassed to say that I was glad for the end of Shaco week. It wasn’t good. In fact, it was disturbingly not good. I can’t stand feeling like a non-factor in a game, and for most of Shaco week, that’s exactly how I felt. I’ve also never been in love with the pet controls in League of Legends, and I had more than a few frustrating encounters with my own clone. I’m worried for Shaco’s future, mostly because he has such a great ganking kit. A slight buff in the wrong direction and he could become a big problem.

As one forum-goer mentioned this week, players don’t really have a reason to pick Shaco when Nocturne is on the board. While their kits aren’t exactly the same, they do perform similarly, it’s just that Nocturne is the much stronger of the two. I know some of you have said that Shaco is really designed as a split pusher, but I have to disagree.

In my experience, Shaco requires much more farm to effectively split-push than many of the other characters in the game. For one, he does not clear creeps well, even with a Madred’s. That’s pretty much the bread and butter of any split pushers kit – can they burn down creep waves to amass a little pushing army behind them. Shaco can’t until mid-late game. Master Yi can do it by level seven. Many of the best split pushers also have an attack damage or attack speed modifier to help them push. Again, Yi is a great example, but so is Sivir, Ezreal, Nasus and as mentioned above, Nocturne. All of those characters also have creep clearing ability, which makes them infinitely better than Shaco at the split push. If he has one thing going for him, it’s that he can escape gank attempts better than many of the others, but that doesn’t really make him a good split pusher so much as a safe one.

I think Shaco’s biggest problem is that his Deceive and his Jack in the Box no longer work well together. Some time ago, Shaco was able to drop JitBs from stealth, which made him excellent at ganking. He could deceive in, drop a box behind the unsuspecting enemy, and still get the crit bonus from Deceive. Now, though, he’s forced to decide between that Deceive damage or planting a box. The box is pretty much always the better choice, but it gives away your position and allows the enemy a chance to make an escape.

That said, Deceive can be extremely frustrating to play against, especially if the Shaco gets fed. For every complaint I have about Shaco, I’m certain I could find someone who loathes him the way I loathe Mordekaiser. I get it. Fed Shaco is like fed Eve, but he’s more escapable. Still, I think Shaco is overdue for some love, and from the look of Guinsoo’s Twitter feed he’s about to be getting some, along with some bug fixes.

If I could change one thing about Shaco, I think it would be to remove Jack in the Box and replace it with something else. While I think JitBs are great little gag additions to a jester’s kit, they serve very little purpose beyond Shaco’s early jungle and ganks. They die far too easily to AoE, get accidentally triggered by minions entirely too often, and deal pitiful damage. He needs another skill that gives him a more reliable jungle or more reliable lane. He already has a poison, so my suggestion would be some kind of attack speed or attack damage modifier or possibly another AoE style skill to help him plow through the jungle.

That doesn’t really address his survivability problems, but I think with more consistent damage and more utility out of his W, he could scale much better and be able to purchase a bit more survivability along the way. Shaco was fantastic once, but he hasn’t kept up with the bruisers and he can’t possibly withstand deathcap mages.

Leona patch included Spectator prep

I haven’t been on the forums much over the weekend, mostly because of the sheer volume of rage threads since the Leona patch, so maybe someone already covered this. I played a ranked game earlier today and couldn’t help but notice that the pick/ban screen had undergone a small change. Bans are now listed under the respective team that chose the banned character. The portraits are also small enough to allow for more than four bans.

I can only think of one reason to make that kind of change – Spectator Mode. The old system was fine. It was easy enough to understand and it certainly wasn’t the sort of function I would expect Riot to bother changing unless it was tied to another feature. The only feature that could possibly tie to would be Spectator Mode.

I hate to make predictions about this, because Riot’s timing is known only to Riot, but it seems like Spectator Mode could be right around the corner. I can’t say I’m dying to get my hands on it – I think the cases are rare that I would want to spectate a game, but it will be great for the competitive scene. It also seems totally reasonable that replays could have been the technical problem that delayed Leona’s release.
